In the News (Wed 23 Dec 09)

§ 26. either. 1. Grammar. The American Heritage Book of English Usage. 1996
When using either as a conjunction, you can apply it to more than two elements in a series: She left her glove either at the convenience store, the library, or the playground.
But when either is followed by of and a plural noun, it is often used with a plural verb: Either of the parties have enough support to form a government.
When all the elements in an either … or construction (or a neither … nor construction) used as the subject of a sentence are singular, the verb is singular: Either Eve or Herb has been invited.

They were covered from head to foot with mud, and their faces were bleeding either from having been kicked or from the stones; they looked like corpses, but the crowd was so dense that I got only a few momentary glimpses of the wretched creatures.
His eyes had the brightness of fever, there was a hectic flush upon either cheek, and dark crusts clung to his lips; the thin hands upon the coverlet twitched incessantly, his voice was croaking and spasmodic.

Either precedes two, or more, co["o]rdinate words or phrases, and is introductory to an alternative.
Either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth.
Few writers hesitate to use either in what is called a triple alternative; such as, We must either stay where we are, proceed, or recede.

Either (pronounced EE-thuhr or EI-thuhr) as adjective or pronoun) is Standard as a substitute for each, usually used for one of two persons or things: You know my parents; either [either one] would make an excellent director.
As a conjunction (in the either/or construction), either is Standard when used of more than two, as in She is a good athlete, working either golf, tennis, or swimming into her daily routine, although Edited English prefers its use with two only.

Normally I don't post it when I update my site, but I think this might be helpful for a lot of people -- especially those who, unlike me, spend their evenings doing something besides playing around with the calculations in GURPS to see if there's a better way to do something.
When an ability is designed so it can be affected by either one limitation or an alternate limitation, multiply the percentage values of both limitations together to arrive at a final value.
His ability is much more versatile than if he'd taken either of those limitations by themselves, and the value reflects that.

Similarly, it would be inconceivable to apply an objectivist approach to intention, for it is the defendant's state of mind that has to be ascertained, for the jury to infer intention.

Normally when I see a registered voter survey with the Democrat ahead by two points, I assume that means that the Republican is either tied or slightly ahead, since historically the difference between registered voter polls and election day results ends up being between 3-5 points.
As such, either something unprecedented is happening in Pennsylvania to the benefit of the Kerry campaign, or this is a sample which is a bit overly optimistic for him.
Earlier polls showed him doing better than that, and Pennsylvania is a state which has been winnable by either party for quite some time (as shown by it having two Republican senators while having gone Democrat the last three elections).

Harris' campaign manager, Jim Stearns, said he doesn't draw conclusions from automated polls either, but believes the results reflect that Harris has focused voters' attention on Hallinan's inability to run an efficient and effective district attorney's office.
