F16 Ejection seat - ACES II
The ACES II (Advanced Concept Ejection Seat) is considered a smart seat since it senses the conditions of the ejection and selects the proper deployment of the drogue and main parachutes to minimize the forces on the occupant.
The seat is a derivative of the Douglas Escapac seat.
To prevent the seat from tumbling when the aircraft is in a roll maneuver or there is a center of gravity imbalance, another (smaller) rocket called a STAPAC is attached to a gyroscope.

When pilots tested the same seat during a mission, however, they complained of pressure on the lower back.

Early Swedish ejection seats   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The system that was developed was a compressed air ejection seat which was patented and trialled on the ground by Saab during 1941.
After ejection the seat straps (by this time the only straps were across the waist) were disconnected automatically, but the parachute had to be opened manually.
The first emergency ejection I know about was when the test pilot Schenk ejected from the prototype Heinkel He 280 V1 on 13 Jan 1943 and the first production aircraft with ejection seat was Heinkel He 219.

  Gemini Ejection
The ejection seat was to provide the crew a means of escaping from the Gemini spacecraft in an emergency while the launch vehicle was still on the launch pad, during the initial phase of powered flight (to about 60,000 feet), or in case of paraglider failure after reentry.
In addition to the seat, the escape system included a hatch actuation system to open the hatches before ejection, a rocket catapult to propel the seat from the spacecraft, a personnel parachute system to sustain the astronaut after his separation from the seat, and survival equipment for the astronaut's use after landing.
The purpose of these simulated off-the-pad ejection tests was to investigate the effects of varying the center of gravity on the trajectory of the ejected seat and to optimize the timing of the recovery sequence.

 Howstuffworks "How Ejection Seats Work"
It's important for many types of aircraft to have an ejection seat in case the plane is damaged in battle or during testing and the pilot has to bail out to save his or her life.
The purpose of the ejection seat is simple: To lift the pilot straight out of the aircraft to a safe distance, then deploy a parachute to allow the pilot to land safely on the ground.
Ejection seats are placed into the cockpit and usually attach to rails via a set of rollers on the edges of the seat.

Originally the seat was designed to use a 2 litre compressed air bottle as the propellant being fed via a valve to the lower end of the tubes but this proved unsatisfactory and performance was poor.
On ejection the pilot's waist straps were automatically released as the seat passed the rim of the cockpit leaving the pilot to operate his own rip-cord.
The soft seat pack was replaced by a hard seat case which lessoned the acceleration on the pilot during the initial stages of ejection.

HAL aircraft ejection seat fires accidentally on the ground - Deccan Herald   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Against all safety norms the ejection exercise was conducted inside the prototype hangar of HAL Bangalore Complex while the aircraft was on the ground during 28 January.
Ejection seats are fitted with a rocket or pyro-cartridge, which fires the seat upwards and away from the aircraft, with a parachute that opens automatically for the pilot to make a safe landing.
During an actual ejection, to prevent a pilot from injury, it is necessary to ensure that aircraft parts are not an obstruction in the ejection trajectory.

 Ejection Seats
At 0.65 seconds after the seat leaves the floor of the aircraft, the seat separator system is activated and that releases the lap belt and forces the occupant away from the seat with the parachute.
This phase of the ejection sequence is critical to the outcome of the entire process of escape and yet 90 per cent of all non-fatal injuries associated with escape occur during landing.
During ejection, telescoping booms are deployed from the seat to stabilize the attitude of the seat from the time it leaves the aircraft until the seat and its occupant decelerate to the speed where the recovery parachute is deployed and the occupant is separated from the seat.

 Seat history
A back-up, or secondary, seat actuating device was situated between the pilot’s knees, where it was conveniently at hand in the event unfavorable G forces made grasping the face blind actuator difficult (it is interesting to note that this innovation is now used almost uniformly by all current ejection seat systems).
Seat actuation was again initiated by either use of the a face blind or a secondary "grab-loop" situated on the seat between the occupant’s knees.
The Mk.IV seat incorporated for the first time a between the legs ejection handle as a secondary means of actuation ejection, since it had been determined that in certain situations the effects of adverse inertia and G loading made it difficult to use the conventional face-curtain actuator.

Ejection control handle safety pins and safe/armed handles are provided to render the ejection seats safe when the aircraft is parked between flights and at all other times on the ground.
Ejection is initiated by pulling a seat firing handle situated on the front of the seat bucket between the occupant's thighs.
The seat is stabilized and the forward speed retarded by a drogue and bridle system, followed by automatic deployment of the personnel parachute and separation of the occupant from the seat.

 Modeling ejection seats
Most of the modern seats are known simply as "0-0" (zero-zero) seats, meaning that they are fully capable of ejection of the aircrewmen from "0" feet altitude and without any forward airspeed (as opposed to earlier seats which required a predetermined altitude and speed for safe deployment of the seat and its parachute).
The seat is usually mounted onto or into to the aircraft using a "rail" type of system and often attached to the back of the bulkhead itself, rather than the floor of the aircraft (which appears to be the way most model kits depict them).
One is the ability for the seat to work effectively underwater (should the aircraft be submerged), with full oxygen supply to the pilot (assuming his oxygen mask is in place) and the ability of the pilot's parachute and harness to separate while in the water.

Aerospace Application: Ballistic Ejection Seat Testing
Ejection seats thrust pilots from flying craft quickly and safely when their lives are in imminent danger or they lose control of the craft and are unable to land it safe and sound.
Modern ejection seats contain a certain amount of intelligence that decide how the pilot will be released from the seat once outside of the craft.
In addition, a variety of seat actuators use ballistic-driven components such as explosive bolts and shear pins to deploy the ejection seats, remove the pilots from the seat at the optimal time, and inflate their parachutes.

TORNADO EJECTION SEAT PRINCIPLES - WHEN EVERYTHING GOES WRONG   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The ejection seat is mounted on the combined guide rails and telescopic ejection gun unit which in turn is attached to the aircraft structure.
The ejection gun provides the initial thrust for seat ejection by means of one primary and two secondary cartridges propelling pilot and navigator in their seats from 0-160 mph in a quarter of a second.
A multi-tubed rocket motor under the seat pan is ignited, as the seat leaves the ejection gun and sustains the thrust initially impart by the ejection gun, to carry the seat to sufficient height to enable the parachute to deploy and develop even if ejection is initiated at zero speed at ground level.

CTC and Goodrich Successfully Develop Modular Ejection Seat Prototype for Air Force
The new Modular Ejection Seat will accommodate current ACES II subsystems, including ballistics components as well as components that are currently under development, and improve safety.
These improvements are achieved by the design of the modular structure, which allows the seat to be disassembled and removed from the cockpit, by sections, without first requiring the removal of the aircraft canopy or hatch.
The seat has been well-received by aircraft maintainers, and the increased safety aspects of the seat structure are welcomed by the larger-in-stature aircrew members.
