Eketahuna is a small rural service town, the most southerly in the Tararua District in the Manawatu-Wanganui region of the North Island of New Zealand.
Eketahuna is considered by some to be the epitome of stereotypical rural New Zealand towns, and is occasionally used in conversation to represent "the real New Zealand".
The 2001 census recorded Eketahuna's population at 579.

Eketahuna is situated on the banks of the Makakahi River in northern Wairarapa.
By road Eketahuna is 26 miles south west of Woodville (27 miles by rail) and 25 miles north of Masterton (22 miles by rail).
It was extended to Mauriceville on 14 June 1886, to Mangamahoe on 10 January 1887, and to Eketahuna on 8 April 1889.

Eketahuna residents and ratepayers were given a chance yesterday to tell the Tararua District Council what it thought about being asked to chip in for Dannevirke's $4.5 million High Street upgrades.
Council staff and Mayor Maureen Reynolds joined the Eketahuna Community Board (ECB) for an open forum on the plans.
An upgrade for Woodville's main drag is scheduled in the council's 10-year plan and Mr Winsett said Eketahuna and Pahiatua would also need work in the next 20 years.

A tug of war is being waged for Eketahuna with a lobby group trying to spirit the town away from Tararua to link up with Masterton District Council.
In an effort to counteract the arrival of the petition in town the community board is planning to distribute flyers forewarning ratepayers.
He said the board acknowledged that Eketahuna had close ties with Masterton through its sporting associations but he did not consider that the town would be better off under another local authority.

Gone were the slices and lamb shanks of his mother, and in their place was a perfect all round game that saw the young Flees not only make the cut-let but triumph by 14 shots in a specially-arranged series of matches against older sheep from the same pasture as his mother at Eketahuna.

 Scoop: Small town fights back, abandoned by big banks
The tiny Tararua town of Eketahuna is setting up its own money exchange after the big banks refused to set up shop there or even provide an automatic teller machine.
Since then she has worked with the council and the Eketahuna Community Board to develop the proposal, using her research report as a basis.
The exchange will be run by staff in the council’s service centre and will aim to break even rather than make a profit, with the council subsidising the operation for the first six months on a trial basis.
