It was to go down in history as "the El Alamein position" and, before 1942 was out, would be not only the decisive turning point in the Desert War, but also in Britain's fortunes overall in the Second World War.
Reconnoitered by General Sir James Marshall-Cornwall earlier in the summer, the Alamein line ran for about thirty miles from the Mediterranean coast near the small railway station of EL Alamein to the cliffs edging the Qattara Depression, which was a vast area of impassable, low-lying salt marshes that effectively closed the Desert flank.
Four defended localities were prepared: the largest around EL Alamein; the next along Ruweisat Ridge; the third about Abu Dweiss, and the fourth at Deirel Shein.

Montgomery showed extreme caution when pursuing the Axis forces after El Alamein, which he could afford to do as his overwhelming numerical superiority neccesitated no hasty pursuit and the forces from the Torch landings now formed the 1st Army which was also advancing in the direction of Tunis.
Again it is true that numerically, Montgomery was in a very good position before El Alamein and this has to be weighed against the success of his strategy.

Rommel's worn-down forces in Libya were replenished, and in January and May 1942 new Axis offensives succeeded in defeating the 8th Army (less adept in co-ordinating the action of its armour, artillery, and infantry than the Afrika Korps) and driving it back into Egypt as far as El Alamein.
Rommel seemed poised to drive on to Cairo and beyond; yet even as the British were being driven back in early 1942, the logistical balance was beginning to swing against the axis.
The change in fortune brought about by this Third Battle of El Alamein, in which Axis forces had been defeated through weight of fire-power more than through superior generalship, turned out to be definitive.
