 The Myth of Passenger Train Profitability
With only one exception, all of them want to see passenger trains run, and all of them embrace the idea that it is the responsibility of the federal government to provide the leadership and the financial support for a strong and growing passenger-train system in our nation.
Passenger trains have not enjoyed a favorable economic or political environment in this country since the 19th century.
In fact, all forms of intercity commercial passenger transportation are money-losers-if you calculate all of their costs in the same way we calculate the costs of passenger trains.

El Capitan was one of the named passenger trains of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, and second only to the Super Chief in terms of popularity and level of service provided.
El Capitan was the first of Santa Fe's trains to utilize the "Big Dome"-Lounge cars and double-decker "Hi-Level" coaches developed by Budd in the early 1950s.
1937: El Capitan is conceived to compete with the Pennsylvania Railroad's low-cost, high-speed train the Trail Blazer.

The Santa Fe set a standard for passenger trains that must still be held too today by Amtrak for present day trains Nos.
When Amtrak took over the trains, Santa Fe held back their right to use the name "Chief" as the standards had slipped to an all time low in passenger service.

The E1 was the second model in a long line of passenger diesels of similar design known as EMD E-units.

Passenger cars have various floor plans such as coach, diner, lounge, parlor, sleeper, private, office and various combinations (eg sleeper-lounge).
Pullman cars ran in regularly scheduled trains on every major railroad, but the Pullman porters were employees of the Pullman Co. Pullman continued to operate it's sleeper fleet into the lightweight era, but eventually became a separate entity from the car builder Pullman-Standard.
The passenger reserved one just like he would a roomette or any other accommodation, bought a first class ticket from the railroad and paid the Pullman Co. an accommodation charge.

Passengers could reach their trains by walking in the overhead concourse and down a set of stairs to the platforms at ground level.
It is sad to think that the hundreds of trains that stopped at busy Kansas City Union Station daily in the 1940's have dwindled to the point to where only a dwarf depot (about the size of a typical branch line depot) would be enough to serve the remaining passenger base.

On May 5th, 2006, at approximately 7:20 AM, CHP officers and Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to a vehicle collision which occurred southbound on US-101 north of the El Capitan State Beach offramp.
The vehicle, a 1998 BMW 740 Il, had left the roadway to the right and traveled down a 50-60-foot embankment, landing on its roof on the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.
