El Cid and also El Cid Campeador is the name commonly used for the important Spanish knight and hero, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar (born in Vivar[?], Burgos, Spain circa 1045, died in Valencia, Spain in July 1099).
Never once defeated in battle, El Cid is credited with having made a large contribution to the expulsion of Spain's Islamic conquerors.
El Cid's army had a novel approach to planning strategy as well, holding what might be called brainstorming[?] sessions before each battle to discuss tactics.

It is obvious to me that the reason EL Ivor (dead or alive) created a $20,000 CD player is to prove that he is also the master of digital, but I haven’t experienced his CD player so I can’t comment.
Evidently the wild Haggis herds have been roaming the hills and forest of Scotland for tens of thousands of years and have survived because they stay away from humans and when approached become very mean (Note: these are long tooth ferocious beasts and a mature boar can weigh 500 pounds).
Because EL Cid was one of his favorite movies EL Ivor, near death, instructed....

Gladiator was the last epic movie I truly enjoyed...and the standard to which I now compare all action epics.
Now his father in the movie, Liam Neeson (sp?) should have been the star, and will always be remembered for this line he uttered in Heaven..."I once fought for 2 days with an arrow through my testicle!" I also didn't really experience any excitement at the few and far between battle scenes.
Ben Hur and Spartacus, those were movies based on good scripts, good acting and not on big, epic battles.

Sorry Anthony, El Cid and Don Quixote are two different characters.
While El Cid is based on a real Spanish knight (around the time of King Arthur, etc...), Don Quixote written by Cervantes in the 1500s (I think).
The El Cid story is unrelated, although does seem to include a few coincidental near-same experiences.

I saw it as a man who became as good as he could get, and when the shit hit the fan he just did his thing and was lucky enough to live.
The movie doesn't play him up to have the swordsmanship of Katsumoto or even the dude that hated him so in the earlier parts of the film (his sparring partner).
It kind of reminded me of the movie EL CID where all Rodrigo wanted for his King was to be a King, act as a King...

It certainly is a timely film and I find its vision of mutual tolerance and charity between Christians and Muslims particularly welcome at the present moment (especially with all those frothering neocons yapping about a clash of civilizations).
It will be interesting to see Ridley Scott's forthcoming Crusades film, which looks to be an avatar of El Cid.

I went over to Clement's house around 12 to start our El Cid movie for spanish, which by the way looks to be shaping up nicely in places, and then went to the coffee house with Mere at 7.
