El Cielo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
El Cielo is dredg's second album, released on October 8, 2002.
One of the main influences on the band for El Cielo was a painting by Salvador Dali entitled "Dream Caused By The Flight Of A Bee Around A Pomegranate One Second Before Awakening," which also happens to be what the acronym in "Brushstroke: dcbtfoabaaposba" stands for.
Early pressings of El Cielo were in a cardbord fold-out CD holder with pictures of clouds bordered by runes.

El Cielo is Dredg's second second LP, and the progression between their debut, Leitmotif and this one is absolutely stunning.
El Cielo is a perfect companion to anyone's music collection and will more than please those looking for a little more substance in their melodic rock diet.

El Cielo is a cinematic-sounding effort—so cinematic that recording the album required a storyboard.

The album caught the ears of not only listeners hungry for original music, but some big-wigs at Interscope as well, who promptly signed dredg and re-released Leitmotif for major distribution while the band worked on its second full-length album, El Cielo.
El Cielo hit store shelves in 2002 to rave reviews across the industry and proved that dredg wasn't simply a 1 1/2 trick pony.
The album's vocals are very "busy" in that there aren't all too many moments where the band is left to paint an aural picture for the listener to put together.

Or if, say, you're last album (El Cielo) was a concept work inspired by a Dalí painting with the cumbersome title "Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bumblebee Around a Pomegranate a Second Before Awakening" and by the sleep disorder, sleep paralysis.
That's when you feel you are awake but you can't move your body or speak, sometimes accompanied by the very uncomfortable feeling that someone is in the room with you, though Gavin Hayes, frontman for the band in questions, Dredg, says he has quite enjoyed the experience himself.
The title track, a possible hit-to-be with a big, irresistible chorus, is an unmistakably personal expression about the struggle for artistic integrity, and for integrity in general, certainly a theme close to the heart of any professional artist.

But for this album, the "latest and greatest" keyboards were, in his mind, instruments which re-created the vintage keyboard sounds of the ‘70's, including the Korg CX-3 (standing in for Hammond B-3) and a plug-in module called SampleTank which reproduces the old Mellotron sound.
Although these albums are not the pinnacle of originality, they still remain classics of the mid-'80s UK neo-progressive movement, and as such are quite good, although the recordings leave much room for improvement.
The first album is a masterpiece of finely crafted classically inspired folk-rock, with a wide range of influences; accesible, inspired and idealistic, it lent strong evidence of musical credibility to the otherwise haphazard and self-indulgent San Francisco music scene of the late 60's.

Willie's first gold album, with the hits "Che Che Colé" and "Te Conozco." Almost all the tunes are by Colón and/or his lead singer Hector Lavoe, and they're all good - the slow numbers ("Ausencia") are as gripping as the faster salsa ("Juana Peña").
Lyrically, the album is hilariously irresponsible, with the Bernie Goetz-like endorsement of extralegal revenge on the title track, and the celebration of a gangster on the scorching "Juanito Alimaña." The album closer is another eleven minute marathon, "Pase La Noche Fumando," and it's amusing if not a masterpiece.
Colón had a huge hit with the Omar Alfanno composition "El Gran Varon," a sympathetic portrayal of a gay man who is abandoned by his family and eventually dies of AIDS; the tune switches from quiet pathos to swinging abandon punctuated with syncopated horn riffs, then back to pathos, back to abandon...

Unfortunately I'd never gotten a chance to see dredg live until this point and I was quite anxious to see if dredg's live performance would impress me as much as their album.
The live show lacks some of the over dubbing and some of the more intricate effects from the album (although there is a lot going on in the live show) but adds volume and heaviness to the sound.
I strongly recommend to anyone to get El Cielo and do not pass up the chance to see dredg live.

But the conclusive evidence of Dredg's wide-screen ambition is to be found on its forthcoming cinematic major label debut, El Cielo - its most tunefully captivating and sonically devastating work to date.
