In Belgium he published (Ghent, 1891; Manila, 1900) "El Filibusterismo", a sequel to "Noli me tangere".
Its animus may be judged from its dedication to three Filipino priests who were executed for complicity in the Cavite outbreak of 1872.
The reasons given were the finding in his baggage of leaflets, "satirizing the friars and tending to de-catholicize and so de-nationalize the people"; and the "publication of 'El Filibusterismo' dedicated to the memory of three traitors_condemned and executed by competent authority_and whom he hails as martyrs".

Philippine national hero Jose Rizal's (1861-1896) second novel, El Filibusterismo (1891) was written in Castilian, a language only 1% of the population could read, and published in Ghent.
Small wonder then that by the latter nineteenth century, "filibustero" was also glossed as "subversive," in the sense of a disruptive presence, a figure who by word or deed, suddenly and surreptitiously steals upon the social order.

His famous and widely read novels, Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not) and El Filibusterismo (The Subversive), awakened a nation from a long, deep slumber and highlighted the need for significant reforms and an end to Spanish abuses.
The Spanish authorities banned his novels, branding them as subversive because it was critical of the frailocracy and the colonial administration.

The quote is by Father Florentino, during a discussion with the dying Simoun, in the last chapter of the Fili.
Father Florentino: "To suffer and to work!" (El Fili, 1997, 409) Easy for him to say and, unlike many politically timid Rizal critics, we should avoid the temptation of confusing Father Florentino's thoughts on revolution and social change with Rizal's.
When the events of 1872 took place, Padre Florentino feared that his parish, because of the huge benefices it yielded, would draw attention to him, and a pacifist before anything else, he sought retirement, living since then as a private citizen on his family estate, situated on the shores of the Pacific.

El Filibusterismo, as a sequel to Noli Me Tangere, continues the Noli's plot but also contains what is in effect a metafictional rereading with commentary of the first novel.
Turning to the text of El Filibusterismo, one can spot the first of a number of ruses on the dedicatory page, which addresses both "The Philippine people and the Spanish Government." Speaking to two addressees, the novel has no single message, but several strongly formulated messages, some mutually contradictory.

Inspired by what the word filibustero connoted in relation to the circumstances obtaining in his time, and his spirits dampened by the tragic execution of the three martyred priests, Rizal aptly titled the second part of the Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo.
In veneration of the three priests, he dedicated the book to them.
