		El verso adquiere su característica al ser una estructura literaria que se compone de una métrica definida, un ritmo conseguido por la ubicación de las sílabas tónicas y átonas, o una rima, cuando el verso se encuentra formando grupos.
		El verso tiende a ser confundido con el poema debido a que desde la edad media, y hasta el siglo XIX, la poesía se apoyaba exclusivamente en la composición en verso, preferiblemente rimada, sin embargo hoy, algunos movimientos literarios admiten creaciones poéticas en prosa.
		El verso rimado tiene un origen probable en la región de la península itálica en el medioevo, donde nacen composiciones versificadas que persisten hasta hoy en día como en soneto, la décima, el madrigal.
