The mission of El Museo del Barrio is to present and preserve the art and culture of Puerto Ricans and all Latin Americans in the United States.
El Museo del Barrio was founded in 1969 by a group of Puerto Rican parents, educators, artists, and community activists in East Harlem's Spanish-speaking el barrio, the neighborhood that extends from Ninety-sixth Street to the Harlem River and from Fifth Avenue to the East River on Manhattan's Upper East Side.
El Museo holds twenty-five interviews on videotape, undertaken in 2001 as the preliminary phase of a compilation of the history and timeline of El Museo.

El Museo del Barrio was the outgrowth of a city-wide effort on the part of Puerto Rican and African American artists, educators and community activists to gain community control over education and social services.
El Museo may try to transcend its Puerto Rican origins but its permanent collection remains about 75 percent Puerto Rican, a factor which makes it a Puerto Rican institution regardless of what the board now desires it to be.
El Museo does not have a sizable Latin American collection at present and there is no acquisition plan or donation in the wings that I am aware of.

Today, El Museo del Barrio stands solidly alongside the museum heavyweights of Fifth Avenue, but this was not always the case.
According to these (increasingly scarce) critics, when it was founded in 1969 El Museo was meant to be a cultural center for the predominantly Puerto Rican population of El Barrio, also known as Spanish Harlem, and not an important international institution for showcasing Latin American and Caribbean art.

I think that instead of worrying about "which direction" el Museo is going, we need to support it by going to visit it as often as we can, becoming members (and therefore we become shareholders), and make constructive suggestions and recommendations.
El Museo needs to move to a bigger place (within the confines of El Barrio) and devote a good portion of that space to the culture that founded it.
El museo would then have a WHOLE building to itself; it would go from 7,500 square feet of gallery space to over 30,000 square feet.
