Defib: Randy Adams interviews Jim Andrews about Nio, March 22, 2001
Well, I have written two essays with the Nio project, one of which is called 'Nio and Audio Programming with Director 8' which pretty much reveals the main ideas behind verse one of Nio.
I find the same element of 'play' in much of your work.
Since the sounds are synchronized with the animations, Nio is, in part, an exploration of the tone of motion of language, of sound, a kind of lettristic dance, vortex of letters, an odd visual/sound poem.

The Servlet API and NIO: Together at last
With the introduction of NIO in JDK 1.4, enterprise developers finally have a built-in solution to the thread-per-use model: Multiplexed I/O allows a growing number of users to be served by a fixed number of threads.
NIO was among the most celebrated (if not the most glamorous) additions to the Java platform with JDK 1.4.
NIO servers are relieved of this and therefore can scale to larger numbers of users.

HIGHLIGHTS OF FY97 and IMMEDIATE OBJECTIVES
Processes under study include large-scale wave disturbances and their role in the general circulation, the effects of boundary conditions such as sea surface temperature and soil moisture, influence of clouds, radiation, and atmospheric convection, and the "teleconnection" of atmospheric anomalies across the global atmosphere.
A new suite of multidecadal experiments will be performed using a medium-resolution climate model (R30L14) to study the interactions of El Nio episodes in the tropical Pacific with the global atmospheric circulation and the surface temperatures of the other ocean basins.
Furthermore, experimental model forecasts are used to evaluate atmospheric predictability and to assess skill in forecasting atmospheric and oceanic climate anomalies, both in general and in connection with the El Nio-Southern Oscillation phenomenon.

The IRI Seaonal Climate Prediction System
Both extremes of the El Nio— Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon have been associated with temperature and rainfall anomalies around the world (Ropelewski and Halpert, 1987, 1989; Halpert and Ropelewski, 1992).
Occasional basin-wide warming or cooling of equatorial sea-surface temperatures, known as El Nio and La Nia events, together with an associated oscillation of atmospheric pressure over the South Pacific Ocean, known as the Southern Oscillation (Allan et al., 1996), can have global climate repercussions.
One of the most significant advances in the atmospheric sciences in recent years has been the development of an ability to predict ocean-atmosphere variability in the equatorial Pacific Ocean (Carson, 1998).

El Nino -- Unlocking the Secrets of the Master Weather-Maker -- J. Madeleine Nash Madeleine J. Nash
EL NIO's story is filled with human drama, tragedy, and triumph.
The story begins with a warming of the coastal waters that Peruvian fishermen have noted for centuries, and the observations of 19th Century British colonial observers who marked the correlation between famine-causing droughts and drastic changes in wind patterns and barometric pressure.
For over a century and a half, scientists and explorers added links of knowledge to a chain of observations that at last created a picture of what they call ENSO: El Nio Southern Oscillation, a picture that contains within it the interplay of wind, water, and geothermal forces that violently affects the world's weather.

They also are seeking evidence of very large and very fast climate changes.

USATODAY.com - Researchers say El Nio more predictable then thought
El Niño, the periodic warming in the equatorial Pacific that affects weather around most of the world, is more predictable than previously thought, researchers report.
The 1877 El Niño, coincided with a failure of the Indian monsoon and a famine that killed perhaps 40 million in India and China, prompting the first attempts to develop seasonal forecasts, Anderson said.
While predicting smaller El Niño events remains tricky, the ability to predict larger ones should be increased to at least a year if the new method is confirmed, Anderson wrote in an accompanying commentary.

El Niño has widespread effects, however, including a reduction in the number of hurricanes in the Atlantic Basin, which includes the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico.
Such an increase in sea surface temperatures is often the first sign that El Niño, one of several global climate patterns that can affect weather conditions around the world, is developing.
In further proof that the effects of a developing El Niño may not be too pronounced just yet, Gray and his team August and September will bring an above average number of hurricanes.
