 El Norte
El Norte is the newest of our 10 regions, in the sense that it couldn't have been a coherent area a decade or two ago.
El Norte also includes Miami and the southern tip of Florida, scene to much chaos as the votes were counted after the 2000 presidential election.
One watershed moment for El Norte came in 1996, when California Democrat Loretta Sanchez ousted Republican US Rep. Robert Dornan from a district in the heart of Orange County, a locale that was once synonymous with American conservatism.

While El Norte does have a strong political message, the core of the film is the relationship between Enrique and Rosa.
The hardships of the journey are told in graphic detail, especially the last test of crossing the border by crawling on their hands and knees through an abandoned sewer line populated by hordes of rats.
El Norte wears its heart on its sleeve and the film tends toward the melodramatic, but it faithfully mirrors the fear and uncertainty that illegal immigrants face each day and I can forgive its flaws and applaud the loving bond between brother and sister and the strength it produces in their lives.

Rob Mercatante's Guatemala Journal: Guatemala News: El Norte review
Directed by Gregory Nava and written by Nava and his German-born wife, Anna Thomas, El Norte told the story of a brother and sister living in a remote village in Guatemala, where their father is executed by military forces while organizing his fellow workers on a coffee plantation.
El Norte, one of the first projects to emerge from Robert Redford's then-nascent Sundance Institute, was the first film to enjoy a significant release that showed, with compassion, honesty and tragic insight, the human lives behind such bloodless abstractions as "illegal immigration" and "undocumented workers."
El Norte was seminal, both for its graceful blend of classical narrative and magic realism and the power with which it brought an otherwise invisible world to life.

El Norte (The North) (1983/2000): Zaide Silvia Gutierrez, David Villalpando, Ernesto Gomez Cruz, Alicia Del Lago - ...
El Norte (The North) tells the story of Enrique (David Villalpando) and Rosa (Zaide Silvia Gutierrez), Guatemalan siblings fleeing their homeland for the safety and promise of the United States, after their father (Ernesto Gomez Cruz) is murdered and their mother (Alicia Del Lago) vanishes, both at the hands of the ruling military regime.
El Norte's rerelease is timely not only because the Guatemalan civil war finally ended last December, after 36 years, but also because the U.S. market is hot, it seems, for all things Latin.
It is significant, I think, that seventeen years after El Norte was made, the issues it tackles, the circumstances the protagonists endure, are still recognizable in the U.S. to the point of seeming virtually unchanged.

SPANISH 9: Writing and Speaking: A Cultural Approach
The independent film El Norte (1983) was the first U.S. feature in the 1980s to portray believable and well-rounded Latin American characters attempting to take charge of their own troubled lives.
The original screenplay for El Norte was written by Nava and Anna Thomas, who received an Academy Award nomination for their efforts.
Nava's stylistic approaches in My Family are conventional, but, as he did in El Norte, the director succeeds in eliciting strong, realistic performances from his actors and in creating a powerful drama that is appealing both for its social conscience and the sensitivity with which the individual characters are portrayed.
