	El Oso - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		El Oso, released in 1998 (see 1998 in music) is the third and final album by the New York City band Soul Coughing.
		Curious, Doughty recorded it into his ASR-10 sampler with the intention of simply reversing it and seeing what the joke was, and wrote the song around what he found there.
		Some consider El Oso to be a marked deviation from their previous albums, Ruby Vroom and Irresistible Bliss, particularly in its departure from jazz and continuation of the melodicism of Bliss in an overall darker mood.

		Which is not to deny that "El Oso" is a great album, but fans will note with slight disappointment the relative lack of literary wizardly.
		"El Oso" has more of a pop feel than "Ruby Vroom" or "Irresistible Bliss" but is still fresh, hip, and jazzy; probably still too different for most radio stations to play it - and too good for most radio stations to play.

		Their trademark wit is still present but less forced; instead it is more intelligent and reflective, and as the band produced this album themselves, the reward is apparent: they sound more self-assured and strong than they ever have.
		While not all of the songs on Menos el Oso are winners, the album as a whole holds up much better than any of their previous efforts.
		They hit all the right notes and create the right hooks for success, at least in theory, but for all the passion in Jake Snider's voice, he might as well be singing about the ham sandwich he ate for lunch.

		At times it's not quite guitar "noodling," but the melodies revolve around intricate and winding riffs as they do on "The Fix," which builds in momentum.
		When the band opts for a pedestrian, atmospheric pace as they do on "El Torrente," it seems to fall flat, more of a breather or experimental filler than anything truly worth repeated listens.
		Catchier is "Pachuca Sunrise" with a great hop in its step that brings to mind something that Death Cab for Cutie might attempt at some point.
