As we journeyed to the places associated with his life and death, as we heard the testimony of witnesses, I was struck anew by the transforming significance of his friendship with the Jesuit priest, Rutilio Grande.
It was not that Romero was unaware of injustices in El Salvador, but he preferred the way of quiet diplomacy with his friends among the rich and the powerful.
It is the poor and dilapidated church in El Paisnal where Rutilio Grande S.J. lies buried with Manuel Solor Zeno at one side and Nelson Rutilio Lamus at the other side.

The words of Mary, our Mother, that powerful woman, more similar to the mothers who in time of war wept over the unjust deaths of their children than to the rich woman she is sometimes shown as, asserted that God would fill the poor with good things while the rich were sent away empty.
Our martyrs, all the martyrs of El Salvador, be they famous or unknown, and whom we remember as the new illustrious people of El Salvador, begin to say to us that there is a new history in which dignity, respect for the powerless and justice are possible for all.

 Events Commemorating the Four Churchwomen
On December 2, 1980, members of the National Guard of El Salvador intercepted the van carrying four American churchwomen as they were leaving the international airport in San Salvador.
The U.N.-sponsored report of the Commission on the Truth for El Salvador concluded that the abductions were planned in advance and the men responsible had carried out the murders on orders from above.
The families of the four churchwomen continue to pursue a lawsuit in U.S. federal court against the former Salvadoran generals retired in Florida, who were senior government officials in El Salvador at the time of the killings.

Before conducting its on-site observation in El Salvador, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights had received numerous communications denouncing violations of the right to life on the part of Salvadoran authorities.

Based on the communications received during its visit to El Salvador, the Commission opened 27 new cases, which cover 37 individuals whose deaths the claimants attribute to governmental authorities.

On March 12, 2002, the 25th anniversary of his death, Mass was celebrated in El Paisnal, with the archbishop of San Salvador, Fernando Sáenz Lacalle, presiding.
In the town square outside the church in El Paisnal where the three are buried, Mass was celebrated at dusk, with Bishop Gregorio Rosa Chavez, auxiliary bishop of San Salvador, presiding.
On March 12, on the hot and dusty road between Aguilares and El Paisnal, the older folks were walking in honor of their martyrs whom they had known and loved, while the younger people were learning about the martyrs' struggle for the Kingdom of justice and committing themselves to carry on the work.

Father Rutilio Grande, a Jesuit priest organizing with the sugar cane peasants of Aguilares, was assassinated together with two companions on March 12, 1977.
This assassination marked an escalation of the repression by the military of El Salvador against those who challenged government policies.
Tilo, as he was called, was loved by the Salvadoran campesino communities due to his humility and respect for the poor farmers and their families--not only as humans, but also as el pueblo de Dios, the People of God.
