Douglas Wood - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sheik Taj El-Din Hilaly, an Australian Islamic leader, carried a payment from the Wood family which he claimed was a "charitable donation to the people of Iraq".
Taj El-Din Hilaly's spokesperson, however, said that Wood was voluntarily released due to a co-operative effort that included Hilay's negotiating.
However, on June 5, Hilaly announced that he had been able to see Wood in the flesh, that he had been given vital medication, and that he was still working toward obtaining Wood's release.

PM - Muslim leader's remarks cause controversy
Taj el-Din Hilaly has had a chequered career of controversy, beginning with an attempt by the Immigration Minister to deport him in 1986.
Hilaly is the Imam of Lakemba Mosque, and usually described as the religious leader of Sydney's Lebanese Muslim community.
Sheikh Taj, who is currently overseas, is reported to have made his comments at a sermon at the Al Quds mosque in Lebanon, and in media interviews with Middle East newspapers.

BBC NEWS Asia-Pacific Sydney Muslim leader faces charges
Sheik Taj El Din Al Hilaly has accused police of overreacting during the incident in Sydney on Monday, when the cleric was stopped during a traffic check and found to be driving an unregistered and uninsured car.
During the altercation, Mr Hilaly complained of chest pains and was taken to a nearby hospital for tests before being released.
Mr Hilaly, 62, is a naturalised Australian who arrived in the country from Egypt.

But it was horsefeathers, as it turns out, just like Hilaly's claim that the Americans should stop hunting terrorists in Iraq's west, because Wood was there -- in Ramadi, 110km from Baghdad -- and would not be released until the assault was called off.
Journalist: Were you at any stage aware that there were moves to have you released by Sheik Hilaly or any other people?
Nor was Hilaly -- who'd told Wood's captors "I value your jihad" -- the first anti-American sheik McGeough found who claimed to have seen the Australian, or at least his jailers.

Australian Muslim Leader, Police Exchange Assault Allegations -- 01/08/2003
Supporters of Sheikh Taj el-Din al-Hilaly said Wednesday he was the victim of a harassment campaign, and they warned the incident could further strain already edgy relations between Australia's Muslims, a minority of 282,000 in a country of some 19 million.
Hilaly's lawyer said by phone Wednesday that he was himself considering laying assault and unlawful detention charges against the police.
Hilaly's spokesman, Keysar Trad, said Wednesday the police officer had radioed in the mufti's details, then returned and raised suspicions that the cleric may be carrying a weapon.

 ICJS - Research
Hilaly was only on a temporary visa at the time, and he didn't help his own cause when he gave a sermon in February 1985 -only a day after the government warned him to tone things down - that appeared to praise suicide bombers and denigrate non-Muslim society.
Hilaly, who was only three weeks away from his 60th birthday and had a heart condition which would shortly require a quadruple bypass, was nearly wrenched from the car and escaped only after the police turned up.
Hilaly says the martyrs lie was referring to are the stone-throwing youths of Palestine, and that the September 11 passage simply evoked the mystery of God's actions.

 The Review - FIGHTING WORDS
In discussions with politicians over the years, I have been told that Hilaly was able to do what he did without sanction because there is an established principle that the State does not interfere in the activities of "religious community leaders".
As if it was not bad enough that they sometimes maintained the truth of vile anti-Jewish demonisations, much worse was when they and their apologists defended the comments by arguing antisemitism was "political" and "acceptable" rhetoric given the intensity of the debate over Israel’s place in the Middle East.
It was also widely believed that an evaluation of the political significance of the Islamic community, which assumed that the majority of members supported Sheikh Hilaly’s activities at that time, was the principal reason for the kid gloves treatment he has received.

USATODAY.com - Australian Muslim seeks hostage release
Hilaly has had a hostile relationship with Australia's center-right government, which has been a staunch ally in the U.S.-led war on terrorism and contributed 2,000 troops to the Iraq invasion.
Hilaly on Saturday urged the militants to release Wood, saying on Arab broadcaster Al-Jazeera that most Australians do not support the government's deployment in Iraq.
On Saturday, Hilaly sat next to the hostage's brothers and videotaped a statement in Arabic saying that he regarded Douglas Wood as his brother, a fellow Australian and an innocent man.

adn.com Iraq : Australia cleric offers to travel to Iraq
The appeal by Sheik Taj El Din Al Hilaly, Australia's mufti since 1989, was broadcast across the Middle East Saturday and came a day after militants holding 63-year-old Douglas Wood issued a 72-hour deadline for Australia to start pulling troops out of Iraq.
Hilaly, with Woods' brothers Malcolm and Vernon seated beside him at a mosque in Sydney, filmed an appeal in Arabic which was beamed by satellite Saturday to Qatar-based al-Jazeera, family spokesman Neil Smail said Sunday.
The ultimatum - which did not say what would happen to Wood if it wasn't met - was contained in new footage broadcast by Arabic television network al-Jazeera Friday that showed Wood, an Australian resident of the United States, with his head shaven and rifles pointed at his head.

 Naruwan Nation: Warmonger
Taj El Din Al Hilaly is the first and only Mufti leader of the 300,000 Muslim Australians.
Al Hilaly is a louse, a warmonger & a liar.
Al Hilaly is doing it to give the impression that the Muslim Brotherhood is harmonious and loving (BS!) and his murderous/war-mongering organisation fronted by his Lakemba Mosque in Sydney's North-West is benevolent (what a fxxxing joke!)

At the weekend, Hilaly recorded a statement for release on Arabic television networks, in which he urged the kidnappers to free Wood, calling him a brother and an innocent man.
Hilaly, the titular Mufti of Australia, met in Sydney with the brothers of 63-year-old hostage Douglas Wood.
Hilaly, an Egyptian-born cleric attached to a large mosque in Sydney, has frequently courted controversy, especially with comments interpreted as supportive of Muslim suicide bombers in the Middle East.

Think murder and then call it poetry (Wacky Australian Mufti)
Al Hilaly has backed away from his recent Lebanon hyperbole because he and his advisers realise that such language is not supported in modern multicultural Australia - even within large sections of the Muslim community.
It has long been said that Al Hilaly, who is the imam at the Lakemba Mosque, has one message in Arabic and yet another (in translation) in English.
But it was - and Al Hilaly was granted permanent residence, leading to full citizenship, when Gerry Hand was immigration minister in 1990 during the final years of the Hawke government.

Hilali entered the picture with the transparent goal of improving his image and painting himself as a hero.
And speaking of Hilaly, he is claiming that he is not trying to claim credit for Mr Wood's release..while he tries to claim credit for Mr Wood's release.
I am beginning to suspect that Hilaly writes for the Michael Jackson website in his spare time (when he is not saving the lives of infidels).

 The Review - Tres Sheikh
While a number of Muslims have told me privately over the years of their concerns with the way Hilaly has abused multiculturalism to act as a force against tolerance, Guilliatt found some who would speak on the record, and it is worth noting their words.
Mohamed Mehio, the manager of Sydney Radio 2MFM, sources Hilaly’s extremism to his intellectual development at the feet of the notorious Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood and the al-Jamaa’al Islamiya which stained Lebanon’s landscape in the 1970s.
A number of well-intentioned figures within the Jewish community have tried to give him second, third and fourth chances over the years, only to see him act as a serial reprobate, which has similarly encouraged, and in his own mind empowered, him to preach extremism.

Asked if that meant Hilaly was not moderate, Downer said: "Some of his statements have not been entirely moderate."
Hilaly has been criticised over a sermon in Lebanon in which he reportedly referred to the attacks of September 11, 2001 as "God's work against oppressors."
Downer added he did not want to have people "who are going to make extremist and provocative statements".

AP Interview: Australian Muslim leader alleges ``extremists'' want him to quit
Sheik Taj El Din Al Hilaly, the mufti of Australia since 1989, claimed the country's politicians were exploiting terror fears to garner votes ahead of a national election later this year.
Despite his attempts to distance himself from the controversy, calls for Hilaly's resignation continued unabated Tuesday.
Hilaly played down the influence of Wahhabism in Australia, where 285,000 people, or 1.4 percent of the overall population of 20 million, is Muslim.

Australian Muslim Leader Called 'Extremist' -- 12/13/2001
Pyne also challenged Hilaly's claim to be spiritual leader of Australia's Muslims, and voiced the hope that Australia's "moderate Muslim leadership" would take the opportunity to disassociate themselves from the cleric.
A publicly-funded television network later chose not to run the footage, in case the quote was perceived as referring to the New York and Washington attacks.
Hilaly had been surprised by the attack, he said.

 Fwd- Interesting comment
Sheik Taj el-Din Al Hilaly, an Egyptian-born Australian citizen, is imam at the Lakemba Mosque in Sydney and since 1988 has been the Grand Mufti of Australia, leader and defender of the country's 300,000 Muslims.
He made it clear that Hilaly will not be welcomed the next time he represents his community before the government.
"In terms of the government's response to Sheikh Hilaly, it's very clear that we view him with great scepticism, and our relationship with Sheikh Hilaly is very tenuous."

Forums - Australian Muslim leader: 9-11 'God's work'
Sheik Taj El Din Al Hilaly, 62, the spiritual leader of Australia's Islamic community, was preaching at a mosque in Lebanon this month when he said "Sept. 11 is God's work against oppressors," Channel Nine television reported.
Al Hilaly also appears to have lent support to Arab suicide bombers during the sermon, declaring a ''war on infidels'' around the globe, and bemoaning the lack of "real men" in the Arab world while praising the ''true boy'' who went to war to become a martyr.
Hilaly, currently in Egypt, upset Australian lawmakers with comments earlier this month in support of Islamic resistance movements in the Palestinian territories, Lebanon and the disputed region of Kashmir between Pakistan and India.

But the justices acknowledged that question would often be controversial. The rulings mean thousands of Ten Commandments displays around the nation will be validated if their primary purpose is to honour the nation's legal, rather than religious, traditions.
In a landmark ruling by the tribunal, it found comments including that Muslims were training to take over Australia, encourage domestic violence and that Islam was an inherently violent religion, had vilified Muslims.

Jihad Watch: Australian Mufti Mixes Motives
But the Mufti of Australia, Sheik Taj El-Din El-Hilaly, has at the same time shown -- again -- that not all the Muslim extremists who threaten us are in Iraq.
Hilaly is a Sunni extremist, like the men believed to hold Wood, and in his appeal, broadcast in Iraq, he told them: "We value your jihad and your efforts."
Surely now even his closest supporters see that this man of hate should no longer represent our Muslims.

eTaiwanNews.com/Muslim leader explains his fiery words to Islamic group
Although the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils said they won't strip Sheik Taj El Din Al Hilaly of his title as Australia's Mufti, it planned to examine the contents of the speeches he made in Lebanon and Egypt last month.
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer labeled the comments as "appalling," while Prime Minister John Howard said Hilaly deserved "to be condemned in the strongest possible terms" if the remarks were accurately reported.
Australia's Channel Nine television had reported that Hilaly also said, "Don't be surprised if one day you hear 'Allahu Akbar' - God is great - from the top of the White House."

During his trip to Lebanon, Hilaly also met with the leader of the militant Hezbollah group, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, and gave a sermon Feb. 13 at the Al Quds mosque in Sidon, Lebanon, calling for jihad, or holy war, against the US and Israel, an Internet dispatch by the Middle East Media Research Institute reported.
Australia's Channel 7 television said that Hilaly also blessed the bones of suicide bombers during his trip, but Trad dismissed that report as a misrepresentation.
"We support the resistance and support, with all our might, the martyrdom operations carried out by the Palestinian liberation movements, operations that are a legitimate act against the cruel occupation, according to all international norms and conventions," Hilaly was reported to have said.

Sheik Hilaly said the Federal Government had helped him get to Iraq, but he was operating independently of the official taskforce trying to free Mr Wood and he had not been briefed on its activities since it arrived in Iraq last week.
However, in Baghdad's dusty Hotel Babylon early yesterday, Sheik Hilaly, the Mufti of Australia, conceded that the colonel had been his only source for what was a lonely glimmer of hope in the silence since Saturday's last message from the hostage takers.

Grand Mufti Sheik Taj el-Din Al Hilaly has been making headlines since he arrived in Australia in 1983, but Shayma believes her father's speeches, spoken in Arabic, are misunderstood and taken out of context.
Eldest daughter Shayma Al Hilaly, 24, says the man who has recently been condemned for a sermon describing September 11 as "God's work against oppressors" is a peace-loving and encouraging father of four.
Did he accept the excuses that Hilali was misunderstood or only reciting poetry, he was asked.
