Elaine Marshall made history in January of 1997 when she was sworn in as North Carolina’s Secretary of State, becoming the first woman ever elected to statewide executive office.
Elaine was born in rural Lineboro, Maryland in November of 1945.
Elaine learned about public and community service at an early age from her father, who for many years was a volunteer fire fighter and community leader, and her mother, who was the organist in the family’s small rural church for more than 60 years.

John Marshall wrote in an affidavit on Feb. 28 that he was compelled to withdraw from the case because of undue pressure on his wife from the defendant.
Shortly after Dr. Marshall was listed as an expert witness in the case, IHC called his wife, Elaine Marshall, to alert her that the company planned to object to his testimony regarding nursing standards of care.
Marshall's wife, Elaine Marshall, was appointed as dean of nursing at Brigham Young University that same year.
