Elaine Shaffer was an American flutist and principal of the Houston Symphony Orchestra between 1948 and 1953.
Solum, a close friend and colleague of Elaine Shaffer, invited her and Hephzibah Menuhin to perform the world premiere of that work in the early 1970s at a benefit for the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia.
Shaffer was diagnosed with lung cancer, though according to Albert Weatherly (flute repairman/dealer in New York) she never ever smoked.

I was playing in most of the VSO concerts either on percussion or on flute when an extra player was needed, as in Strauss' Sinfonia Domestica which Effrem Kurtz conducted.
Kurtz was married to flutist Elaine Shaffer, though I was not smart enough to arrange to play for her.
David Cubbin in Adelaide did however, and was invited by them to go to Curtis to study with Shaffer's teacher, William Kincaid.

Eleanor Lawrence, soloist, recording artist, and teacher, died in New York of brain cancer on January 14, 2001, at the age of 64.
She was a member of the NFA board and from 1977 to 1984 was the editor of the NFA Newsletter, for which she conducted interviews with such prominent flutists as John Wummer and Elaine Shaffer.
She was elected to three terms as president of the New York Flute Club and served on its board and advisory board for more than thirty years.

The happiest announcement of the evening was that Mary Kay Kelley, known to the NVRC staff as "Kay" and to others as "M.K.," has accepted the position of Resource Specialist at NVRC.
She will take over the work of Elaine Shaffer, who is retiring at the end of December.
It is an in-house promotion for Kay, who has worked closely with Elaine for many months.
