The one you read about in the newspaper is Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane, lead singer of the pop group Spanky and Our Gang.
McFarlane reportedly earned the Spanky nickname because she bore resemblance to George "Spanky" McFarland, who starred in the "Our Gang" comedies and -- yes -- the 1936 film "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine." Although McFarlane was a successful child performer, his acting career was essentially over by the mid-1940s.

Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane released an extraordinary album on Epic in the 1970s, prior to her joining the Mamas & the Papas with McKenzie Phillips, the new Mamas playing with the old Papas.
Although the pop elements Spanky was known for are here, the opening track "I Won't Brand You" could certainly be considered the logical sequel to her minor hit "Give a Damn," the album is more country than pop or rock.

Spanky & Our Gang is one of those odd groups that, despite having had a string of Top 40 chart hits in a two-year period from 1967 through 1969, somehow falls between the cracks of 1960s pop music history.
Their hits, particularly "Sunday Will Never Be the Same," "Lazy Day," "Like to Get to Know You," and "Give a Damn," were as much a part of the ambience of the middle to late '60s as any of the best known songs of the Mamas & the Papas with whom they're frequently compared.
