The Elan Valley Reservoirs are a chain of man-made lakes in Wales, west of Rhayader, (also known as the "Welsh Lake District"), using the rivers Elan and Claerwen.
The reservoirs were constructed early in the 20th century to supply clean water to the Birmingham area, by gravity feed along an aqueduct with a gradient of 1 in 2,300.
When construction of the dams was complete, most of the Elan Valley "navvies" (construction workers) moved on to the Derwent Valley in Derbyshire.

Information about the Elan Valley reservoirs can be gained from two excellent sources, the superb website of the Powys Digital History Project and a book published in 1894 with the title "The Vale of Nantgwilt: A Submerged Valley".
It reveals that in 1942 at Nant-y-Gro dam, a dam built for temporary use during the construction of the main reservoirs, experiments in preparation for the dambuster bombings in Germany were conducted.
The River Claerwen was a tributary of the Elan, and its lower stretches became part of the Caban Coch reservoir.

Elan Estates and Powys County Council commissioned an artist to create sculptural seating for the Elan Valley Trail, which follows the path of the dismantled railway alongside four dams on the Elan Estate near Rhayader in Powys.
The Elan dams, Craig Goch, Pen-y-Garreg, and Garreg Ddu with Caban Coch were opened in 1904 while the three Claerwen dams were never built but replaced by one large dam — the Claerwen - constructed between 1946 and 1952.
The Elan Valley railway was built in 1893 to facilitate the construction of the dams and its old route provided an ideal track for the cycle trail.

The waymarked Wye Valley Walk (WVW) heads SSW to a suspension bridge over the river and climbs to a track junction at 960648, where we walked W towards Bwlch Coch.
The valley sides are steep but we found a good flat pitch spot in a loop of the river at 768506.
Continuing up the valley we followed the obvious path which descends a little to the river but the map shows the bridleway ascending through the trees.

Crossing the Afon Elan the road ascends W to a L bend where a path leads off to join the ridge track, which gives good views of Craig Goch reservoir.
Heading SE then NE to Gorllwyn we roughly followed a line of marker stones past Llyn y Ferlen to arrive at the Rhiw Saeson bridleway, which is indistinct but curves around the edge of a flat area at the foot of the slopes rising to the cairns on Y Gamriw.
The NE ridge leads to the Rhiw Llanwrthwl path, which is indistinct here and crosses a saddle to the N slopes, where after a little wandering along the edge we found the broad grassy track that descends steeply through the bracken.

From the valley to Birmingham, there is only a drop of 50 metres, yet the water passes through the pipe aided only by gravity!

Codenamed Exercise Militia Dragon, one of the main tasks for the soldiers involved the construction of a 45 metre steel and wooden footbridge at Elan Village near Rhayader, to replace the current structure which had long since become dilapidated and unsafe.
Soldiers also put their skills to the test in the rebuilding of a culvert and the explosive demolition of a tree on farmland near Brecon.
A bridge opening ceremony was held at Elan Village with a number of civilian and military dignitaries present.
