Elan Vital organizations exist in several countries with the purpose of organizing events in which Prem Rawat is invited to speak.
Elan Vital was incorporated in the USA in 1971, is registered as a church there, and enjoys 501(c)(3) tax exempt status.
In Australia, Elan Vital is a non-profit organization with similar aims as well, stating that the organization is almost completely a volunteer organization and that volunteers offer their time, skills and donations in supporting the effort to make Prem Rawat’s teachings available as widely as possible[5].

Vitalism is best understood, however, in the context of the emergence of modern science during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
These vital properties preclude identifying life with any physical or chemical phenomenon because the behaviour of living tissues is irregular and contrary to forces exhibited by their inorganic constituents.
Because he acknowledged this distance between vital functions in living organisms and what it was possible to explain in physical terms at the time, Magendie was construed by many as a vitalist; if he is a vitalist at all, his vitalism is very different from that of Bichat.

 Europe
From the mid 1970s until the end of the 1990s a Divine Light Mission or Elan Vital, structured on the closed member association model was in existence in most western European countries, although the arrangements in the UK were always at variance to the rest of Europe.
The UK accounts also reveal that Elan Vital[UK] was increasingly transferring a large proportion of its income to other Elan Vital organizations which do not publish details of their financial activities, thus while Elan Vital[UK] was accruing ever larger Charitable income the use of this income was increasingly being hidden from public scrutiny.
From a position where in the year ended March 1996 just 31% of Elan Vital's total income, a sum of £218,500, was transferred abroad in the form of Grants, by March 2002 this figure had grown to 63% of total income, a sum of £1,146,625.

To date Elan Vital Incorporated remains registered as a tax exempt church with the IRS; as a church the organization is not required to make its financial activities public and no firm information is available regarding income, the application of expenditure or the ownership of assets.
The closed world of the Elan Vital 'church' and its associated organizations are by their very nature not readily open to examination, the roles of certain individuals and their inter relationships do provide some insight into the functioning and objectives of the organisational structure that immediately surrounds Prem Rawat.
Elan Vital Incorporated has in the last three years developed a more commercial aspect and although it has removed any direct statement from its advertising that it is 'not a religion' its apparent profit making intention seems to be in conflict with its 'church' status.

Vitalism can be more distinctly defined as: "a doctrine that the functions of a living organism are due to a vital principle distinct from physiochemical forces." In other words, the philosophy posits that living things possess a vital force that energizes them in an unmeasurable, nonphysical, nonchemical manner, which acts beyond the laws of physics.
Dorland's (25th edition) defines Vitalism as," the theory that biological activities are directed by a supernatural force; opposed to mechanism." According to Webster's Third New World Dictionary, vitalism is defined as, "a doctrine that the functions of a living organism are due to a vital principle distinct from physiochemical forces." According to Prof.
The second assertion that vitalism is not a question of the nature of material, but that of biological laws is another example of an act of desperation by those who would force an ad hoc modification to the vitalism theory when confronted with its' own fallaciousness.

But even if vitality should prove to be nothing more than a series of reactions of a chemical and physical nature, the type of evolution to which it yields is differentiated by broad characteristics that distinguish it from merely molecular attractions and affinities.
So long as the vital process is on, there seems to be a ruling or directive principle modifying and counteracting the normal and natural course of the so-called chemical and physical forces.
The result of the vital process is the tendency in the organic product of it to maintain itself as a unity, and become more and more diversified in the course of its life.

On the other hand, vitalism seems to do too little since it does not explain how some inanimate entities in nature (such as the sodium atom or the water molecule) also seem to act as "wholes" with activities distinct from their parts.
Although vitalism is sometimes characterized as a kind of top down causality, in reality it seems that vitalism never gets to the top -- to the being of the whole from which its proper activity follows.

Bergson starts out by showing that the only way in which the two senses of life may be reconciled (without being collapsed) is to examine real life, the real evolution of the species, that is, the phenomenon of change and its profound causes.
If there is a telos to life, then, it must be situated at the origin and not at the end (contra traditional finalism), and it must embrace the whole of life in one single indivisible embrace (contra mechanism).
In any case, in order that human intelligence may attain true knowledge of the essence of the vital impulse, it will have to proceed by means of a mode of knowing that lies at the opposite end of intelligence, namely, instinct.

But in the title of the Indian protesters’ organization, Citizens for Secularism, it means something else: not an anti-religious worldview imposed by the state, but instead an anti-theocratic understanding of a secular state which is fully compatible with the protection of religious liberty.
Therefore the quality of mind we call "humanism" should not be seen as the sinister offspring of a positive secularism, but the lively child of a negative secularism, one that takes an soberly affirmative view of the natural potential inherent in human reason and imagination.
