		The White-tailed Kite (Elanus leucurus) is an elanid kite found in western North America and parts of South America.
		The earliest name for this bird was the White-tailed Kite, and it was given the systematic name Elanus leucurus.
		However, it was argued that it was a subspecies of a European and African species, Elanus caeruleus, at the time known as the Black-shouldered Kite (see, for example, Parkes, 1958), and the recognised name was changed.

		The recent and limited nature of the nocturnal shift is evident in:- the eye (which still has two well-developed foveas, like diurnal but unlike nocturnal, raptors),; the fact that it needs moonlight to hunt; the kite even synchronises its hatching to coincide with the full moon.
		I do not yet have a good fundus photograph of the letter wing that shows both foveas in the same shot, but it looks very similar to this next fundus photo from the fl shouldered kite except that there is less blueish sheen and the foveas are slightly further apart.
		The close proximity of the pits in the elanid kites and the true "booted" eagles (15-16 deg) emphasises the puzzle of having two foveas.

		All of these (excluding scriptus - never associated with axillaris), were once treated as complex Elanus caeruleus-axillaris-leucurus.
		The Letter-winged Kite though related and within the same genus is considered distinct and not associated with the above complex- it ranges in central Australia.
