Biomechanics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The research and analysis can be carried forth on multiple levels, from the molecular, wherein molecular biomaterials such as collagen and elastin are considered, to the macroscopic level, all the way up to the tissue and organ level.
The passive mechanical response of a particular tissue can be attributed to the various proteins, such as elastin and collagen, living cells, ground substances such as proteoglycans, and the orientations of fibers within the tissue.
Elastin is also a major load-bearing constituent within skin, the vasculature, and connective tissues.

Age-related changes in the glycation of human aortic elastin.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Non-enzymatic glycation of proteins is a consequence of hyperglycemia in diabetes and correlates with aging.
Human insoluble elastins were prepared from macro- and microscopic unaltered regions of thoracic aortas, obtained from 68 accident victims, distributed in 15 age-groups, using the method of Starcher and Galione.
These results are consistent with the interpretation that because of its long biological half-life, elastin is susceptible to the slow process of glycation and the following modifications would contribute to the age-related changes of connective tissue.

News in Science - Can damaged tissues spring back into shape? - 13/09/2002
An Australian team is ready to test a synthetic form of elastin — the stretchy component of arteries, lungs, bladders, ligaments and skin — for tissue repair in humans.
One difference, however, is that the synthetic elastin is bound together using small amounts of a chemical 'cement' called glutaraldehyde, rather than the chemical that occurs in the original.
Synthetic elastin could then be used to help scientists further understand the properties of natural elastin, as well as for applied research.

This is accomplished through the selective binding and subsequent release of growth factors and cytokines, and through its interaction with cell surface receptors[2-4] Although collagen and elastic fibers are the major constituents of the extracellular matrix, the overall function is defined by the interrelationships between all the various components.
Elastin is synthesized and secreted from several cell types in the lung depending on the anatomic location.
The organization of elastin in the lung extracellular matrix begins at the pseudoglandular stage of lung development in association with sites of airway branching.[25] Elastin synthesis is increased during the canalicular and saccular stage of fetal development and reaches a peak during alveolarization in the neonatal stage.
