It is a rare species, known in Poland from scarce localities; a bulk of information about its occurrence comes from the later part of 19th century and the earlier part of the 20th century.
The principal threat to Elater ferrugineus is habitat loss due to forest management and conservation measures consisting in the removal of mould from cavities, drying them and use of fungicidal preservatives.
It is recommended that passive protection should be applied to forest reserves and that certain number of trees should be left in commercial forests to their physiological death.
