Elberfeld is a municipal subdivision of the German city of Wuppertal; it was an independent town until 1929.
In 1888 the district of Sonnborn was incorporated into Elberfeld.
In 1929 the towns of Barmen, Elberfeld, Vohwinkel, Cronenberg and Ronsdorf became a municipal entity officially called "Barmen-Elberfeld;" in the same year, the unified city administration through a vote of its councilmembers decided to rename the newly-incorporated city "Wuppertal." This took place in 1930.

About 100 years ago, Barmen and Elberfeld - two German towns with a combined population of almost 250,000, approximately 10 kilometers apart and both along the Wupper River - began attempts at improving communication and traffic flow.
In December 1894, the Barmen and Elberfeld town fathers accepted Lange's suspended monorail (Schwebebahn) idea, and a contract was signed for building and operating the system between Zoo Station (Elberfeld) and Ritterhausen (Barmen), following the course of the Wupper River.
Later on, in October 1896, the agricultural community of Vohwinkel - adjacent to Elberfeld - agreed to be included, and the system was extended.
