		Since I am a mountain rider, my intention was to cross the northern (Elburz) mountains to reach the Caspian sea.
		The Zagros mountains form a thick wall with Iraq to the west...without them the Iraqis may well have marched all the way into Tehran in the wars early stages when Saddam's forces pushed deep into the country.
		The mountains are, in fact, massive north-south trending ridges with very steep grades from one river basin to another.
