Out of the Silent Planet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The eldila, who work for Oyarsa as messengers and maintainers of the planet, are meant to be angels.
Since the eldila, who fill space (or "the heavens," which are depicted as warm and bright due to the Sun) know nothing about what goes on inside those boundaries, Earth is called Thulcandra, "the silent planet." While Earth has fallen into evil, Mars has not.
All three of these races and the eldila are "unfallen": free of the tendency to evil and sin that plagues humans.

Space Trilogy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Certain very powerful eldila, the Oyéresu (singular Oyarsa), control the course of nature on each of the planets of the Solar System (note the similarity to the Valar, or the higher angels, in The Silmarillion).
The eldila are science-fictionalized depictions of angels, immortal and holy, with the Oyéresu perhaps being angels of a higher order (possibly in the traditional Hierarchy of angels).
The eldila resident on (actually, imprisoned in) Earth are "dark eldila", fallen angels or demons.

Alcasan- "The Head", an executed criminal whose head is recovered by the N.I.C.E. and is supposedly kept alive by intricate machinery.

 The Barrow-Downs Discussion Forum - Maiar=Eldila?
There is a remarkable similarity between the characteristics of C.S. Lewis's "eldila" and Tolkien's Maiar.
The eldila exist on a different plane or level of existence than humans do, are at home in space and almost invisible for humans.
The eldila (sorry about the spelling) are not "gods", and neither are the Oyarsas of each planet.

He had met the creatures called eldila, and specially that great eldil who is the ruler of Mars or, in their speech, the Oyarsa of Malacandra.
We had eldila of our own, he said, Tellurian eldils, but they were of a different kind and mostly hostile to man. That, in fact, was why our world was cut off from communication with the other planets.
If all this were true, then, of course, we should welcome the fact that eldila of a better kind had at last broken the frontier (it is, they say, at the Moon's orbit) and were beginning to visit us.

CBU - Honors Journal - Out of the Silent Planet: A Journey to the Medieval Past - Randy Hude
In fact, as he learns about the hnau of Malacandra and the eldila of the Heavens, he comes back to medieval cosmology: the Heavens, all that is beyond the Moon, are ordered and permanent (The Discarded Image 3-5).
For instance, the eldila are reminiscent of an old belief "that the air is inhabited by a great many beings, some good and some bad, who will live there till the world ends" (Discarded Image 2).

- the sense of the eldila being the frame of reference and the whole of Earth seeming 'slanted' in their presence is repeated in THS when the eldila visit Ransom in his upper room at St Anne's.

His quest for fluidity between dissonant harmonic structures is incessant: He seeks not so much resolve but a kind of transparency that allows for steadfastness as well as disappearance.
Battaglia's compositions -- best evidenced here by "Etude," "Eldila," "Vision," and "Hymn" -- look deeply inside not only musical constructs for answers, but also into spiritual ones (the Sufi poet Rûmî seems to be a deep influence on Battaglia's writing).
The title track extrapolates from Monk's "Blue Monk" and "Hackensack" to achieve a kind of weightlessness of architecture and scale: The swing is in the bass line in the middle register, while the tune's fire spirals out of control on a series of arpeggio developments in B major.

And the nice addition of Malacandra telling Ransom that the Maleldil (meaning "Friend of the Eldila" or angels, God the Father) has "taken strange councils" and dared terrible things, and how these are things that the out-of-the-loop Oyarsas "desire to look into".
OTOH, Perelandra is much longer, and once you get past the lush descriptive work, it can't get more obvious as a rerun of Eden and the Fall of Man on another world.
Even people who would never be able to connect eldila with angels know of Adam and Eve.

At the moment I read this, I could not fathom exactly how it happened, but, for reasons not yet known to me, I knew that Dr. Ransom had been summoned back to Mars, assumably escorted by the eldila, as he called them.
His desire to save his own planet made him feel hopeless now, for Malacandra held the answers he needed in freeing Earth from destruction.
“Why didn’t the eldila take me straight to where the knau are?” Ransom wondered.

I have been a life-long C.S. Lewis fan, and first tackled this book when I was probably about 12, returning to it often throughout the years (I am now 32).
One of my favorite passages concerns the descent of the Eldila (especially Jupiter) into St. Anne's, although I thoroughly enjoyed the work as a whole.
It can be a bit slow-going in parts, and definitely is "British" in numerous of its references, but all in all it's a great end to the series and a very instructive and entertaining story.

Several times in the trilogy the eldila, ministering angels, are associated with pillars of light (Planet 79; Perelandra 18; Strength 321), and here Merlin is seen as the candlewick for their flame.

Other than omitting some irrelevant (for our purposes) interspersed phrasing and sentences, I have changed one word: Lewis' "eldila" (an extraterrestrial angelic being, which might be good or bad) for "extraterrestrial." I leave in the part about the "angels" and spirits, as it applies to the matter-at-hand of current UFOlogical ideas, and crossing the line.
I will also leave out the name of the character to be visited by the storyteller, and you can for "X" substitute the name of your favorite contactee/abductee or crossed-the-line UFOlogist.
