  Geoffrey of Monmouth
In the meantime, Eldol, duke of Gloucester, went to the king, and said, "This one day should suffice for all the days of my life, if by good providence I could but get an opportunity to engage with Hengist; for one of us should die before we parted.
Aurelius animated the Christians, Hengist the pagans; and all the time of the engagement, Eldol's chief endeavour was to encounter Hengist, but he had no opportunity for it.
Nor was Eldol less active in all parts of the field, running to and fro to assault his adversaries; but still his main endeavour was to find opportunity of encountering Hengist.

HISTORY OF BRITAIN, 407-597, by Fabio P. Barbieri
If I have read the origin of Ceredigion correctly, it is worth comparing the allotment of the valuable area of Cardiganshire with the unpleasing land allotment and evident isolation of the Vortigernids of central Wales.
In my view, Geoffrey’s Eldadus and Eldol represent an unhistorical reduplication of the two aspects of the historical St.Illtyd, first a warrior, then a monastic teacher; who lived in the second half of the sixth century (that is, two or three generations after Ambrosius).
The account of Illtyd was preserved chiefly in Brittany (where he was remembered as the great teacher) and in his own monastery of Llanilltyd Fawr; it seems possible that a legend had formed elsewhere in Wales, displacing the Saint in time and attributing him to Emrys/Ambrosius.

This council was made up of the six sons of Urian, (who were therefore the grandchildren of Cherin,) and thought to be the wisest of men.
Their names were: Eldol, Redon, Redec, Samil, Penesil and Pir.
They deliberated for a year and a day over who should rule if neither Belgabred nor Archemil returned, and at the end of their discussions they gave their solemn decree: it should be the kitchen-lad, Capo, whom they said was descended through eight generations from Amerues, sister of Sisil the Second.

Arthurian Passages from Geoffrey of Monmouth
There was present one Eldol, consul of Gloucester, who, at the sight of this treachery, took up a stake which he happened to find, and with that made his defence.
Every blow he gave carried death along with it; and by breaking either the head, arms, shoulders, or legs of a great many, he struck no small terror into the traitors, nor did he move from the spot before he had killed with that weapon seventy men.
All the time Aurelius was fully employed, not only in giving commands, but encouraging his men by his own example; for with his own hand he killed all that stood in his way, and pursued those that fled.

Beside each chief a Saxon was seated, armed with a long knife, and at a given signal each Saxon slew his Briton.
As many as 460 British nobles thus fell, but Eldol earl of Gloucester, after slaying seventy Saxons (some say 660), made his escape.
Geoffrey says the signal of the onset was the utterance of the words Nemet oure Saxas, and that the number of the slain was 460.—Bk.
