  Eleanor Estes
Eleanor Estes, born May 9, 1906, wrote books for children for over 45 years, up to her death in 1988, but it is her early books, particularly those about the Moffat family, published in the early 1940's, that remain her most popular work.
It is Estes' ability to immerse the reader in the perceptions, thoughts and experiences of children make the stories resonate with familiarity and give the reader a sense of shared experience.
Critic Virginia L. Wolf praises Estes' "celebration of the child's spirit" and suggests that it is "her fondness for small daily events and details, her ability to immerse the reader in the perceptions, thoughts and experiences of children, and her characters' earnestness and unconscious humor that make her books an enduring contributions to children's literature.

Eleanor Estes, author of the Newbery Honor book The Hundred Dresses, and Caldecott medalist Louis Slobodkin (Many Moons) make a lovely team in this story of benign humor and sweet times.
This charming work by Newbury Award winner Eleanor Estes portrays the daily lives of a widow and her four children in the fictitious town of Cranbury, Connecticut.
The tales may seem to be from a more innocent time: one of the Moffat girls is scared to death of the police chief because she thinks she's been rude to him, the two boys hitch a ride on the train to the next town, the children enjoy the fun of Halloween pranks.
