Hibbert’s first job was as a typist and weighed gems for a jeweler in Hatton Garden when she was 16.
Hibbert counted among her heroes authors like Charles Dickens, Victor Hugo, the Bronte sisters, and Leo Tolstoy, and in honor of them, began her writing career by writing nine lengthy novels (none of which were published).
Hibbert wrote over 90 historical romances under the Plaidy name (a name chosen because Jean was short, and Plaidy because she lived near Plaidy beach in Cornwall).
