A triangular parcel of land with its southern border on the Ohio River, the Greenville Treaty line on the west and the present Indiana-Ohio line on the east, formed what was known as the "Gore" on the early maps.
The boundaries of Ripley County as it was later named, were thus laid out in the law forming Jennings County, with the provisions that all that part of Ripley County, which was formerly Dearborn County, remain attached to Dearborn County until Ripley County could be organized.
The new county was named for General Eleazer Wheelock Ripley, a hero of the War of 1812.

Eleazer Wheelock, a Presbyterian minister, had from a modest beginning, about 1746, in the private institution of a few youths preparing for college, gathered at Lebanon, Conn., a large and flourishing school, maintained principally by charity, for the benefit of young men designing to enter upon missionary work among the Indians.
Wheelock's preference lay towards the county of the Six Nations, in New York or Pennsylvania, somewhere in the valley of the susquehanna; but circumstances constrained his acceptance of offers made by Governor John Wentworth, of New Hampshire.
Wheelock and two members, united in the formation, by the aid of a council, of a new body under the Congregational government, which still exists as the college church.
