The 2006 general election will be conducted using the 308 ridings contested in the 2004 election; by contrast there were 301 constituencies in the 1997 and 2000 elections.
The 2006 elections will be conducted with the same electoral boundaries used in the 2004, with the exception of two constituencies in New Brunswick: Acadie–Bathurst and Miramichi.
Perhaps the most interesting ridings to watch in the 2006 elections are the 58 marginal seats, where candidates won with a margin of 5% or less in the 2004 elections.

Three months ago, looking forward toward “Elections 2006,” I saw what promised to be an exciting and competitive election campaign that could change the future of the state of Israel.
In part, this election is so boring because Israelis have overwhelmingly told pollsters that they are going to give Kadima and Ehud Olmert a very wide margin to form the next coalition government: because we all know the “winner” in advance, I think most of the country has had a hard time finding lost passion.
In another life, I would have agreed with him about the frequency of elections, but that was before I saw that in Israel’s political system, instability protects the minorities from having their rights trampled.

All evening I’ve been listening to the usual suspects: the centrist pundits, political operatives and party poohbahs who haunt the cable airwaves en masse, and have now taken it upon themselves to tell the country what this election means, and what it doesn’t mean.
It’s an election year, and it’s hard not to be excited about the possibilities this time around.  It’s hard not to be scared, too, when the stakes remain so high.  But in the long view, is the focus on electoral politics an exercise in forgetting about the war in the heat of the battle?
To start, here is a bald hypothesis: the radical right has succeeded in advancing its agenda, and in moving politics at the highest levels to the right, because it has done a better job than the left has at making its policies seem appealing to the center.  There are two parts to this:
