Led by Owen Arthur, the BLP dominates the Parliament of Barbados, with 23 of 28 seats.
Barbados became an independent state in the British Commonwealth on November 30, 1966 and is a parliamentary democracy (modeled after the British Westminster system).
The Barbados Labour Party is defined as “moderate left of center.” Barbados is divided into 11 parishes; The Barbados Labour Party won 75,313 out of 135,083 votes that were cast in the 2003 House election, equaling about 55.75% of the vote.

Barbados has a two-party system, which means that there are two dominant political parties, with extreme difficulty for anybody to achieve electoral success under the banner of any other party.

Acclaimed as the Father of Barbados' Independence, Errol Walton Barrow was born in the parish of St. Lucy on January 21, 1920.
F.A. Hoyos in his "Builders of Barbados", writes that, propelled by Barrow's defence of the sugar workers' cause in the country districts, during the deadlock between the Barbados Workers' Union and the Sugar Producers' Federation over negotiations for increased wages, the DLP won a decisive victory in the December 4, 1961 General Elections.
In reality, Barbados did not have to fight against Britain to achieve Independence, but in one of his speeches, Barrow argued that he would not "be found loitering on the steps of the British colonial office".

Until 1976 all the elections have been won by the DLP, but in 1976 the BLP wins the elections and Tom Adams becomes prime minister.

Barbados was thrown into a state of mourning following the death of Sir Harold Bernard “Bree” St. John at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital late yesterday afternoon after a long battle with cancer.
Sir Harold graduated from the University College with a bachelor of laws degree in 1953 and was admitted to the Inner Temple of the London Bar in 1954.
A member of the Upper Chamber between 1971 and 1976, Sir Harold was re-elected to Parliament in 1976 when the Barbados Labour Party, under the leadership of the late JMGM “Tom” Adams, defeated the Democratic Labour Party in the General Elections of that year.
