The executive branch of Egypt is headed by an elected president, and the Egyptian parliament gave its final approval on June 16, 2005 of the new presidential elections law.
The most recent presidential elections held on September 7, 2005, however, were conducted according to the amended article 76 of the constitution stipulating that the president is to be elected by direct public contested elections, rather than by referendum after being nominated by the People's Assembly as in the past.
Egypt's Judges Club issued a statement on December 2 affirming that the executive authorities did not enable them to have full supervision over the electoral process because the police besieged many polling stations and blocked voters from casting their votes.

Politics of Egypt takes place in a framework of a semi-presidential republic, whereby the President of Egypt is de facto both head of state and head of government, and of a party system dominated by the National Democratic Party.
The Court is the highest judicial power in Egypt and it alone undertakes the judicial control in respect of the constitutionality of the laws and regulations and shall undertake the interpretation of the legislative texts in the manner prescribed by law.
Egypt was the first Arab state to establish diplomatic relations with the state of Israel, after the signing of the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty at the Camp David Accords.

Demonstrators in Egypt would not have dared go on anti-Mubarak demonstrators without the support of the west to the movements of democracy and freedom of the peoples of the Middle East.

CAIRO, May 25 -- A nationwide referendum on multi-party elections in Egypt turned violent Wednesday as pro-government mobs attacked and beat demonstrators on the streets of the capital.
In subsequent races, independent candidates would have to either gain the approval of parliament and a government council dominated by the NDP or belong to a party that is at least five years old.
Election officials assured visiting reporters that thousands of voters had already cast ballots and said more would do so in the evening.

It is quite clear that a very angry mood is developing among Egyptian workers and the state, in collaboration with the leaders of the trade unions, are attempting to stifle the growing opposition.
As we had expected the (state security) police interfered in the trade union elections in an open and barefaced manner.

After Rice canceled a trip to Egypt recently to protest the continued imprisonment of an opposition leader, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak announced the nation would hold multi-party elections this year for the first time, though with potentially significant caveats.
Rice cautioned yesterday that Egyptian elections "will not look like American competitive presidential elections," but she said the United States believes "competitiveness is an important element of the democratic enterprise."
One of the most difficult challenges for the Bush administration is how to balance the push for democracy with its relations with Russia, which has become increasingly authoritarian under President Vladimir Putin.
