Honduras became a state in the United Provinces of Central America in 1821, and an independent republic with the demise of the union in 1840.
Asians in Honduras are mostly of Chinese and Japanese descent.

Honduras continues to participate in the UN observer mission in the Western Sahara, contributed 370 troops for the reconstruction of Iraq, and remains interested in participating in other UN peacekeeping missions.

(AP) Honduras' ruling party said it had enlisted 300 lawyers to check results of the country's disputed presidential election for evidence of fraud.
With nearly 80 percent of the ballots counted, opposition Liberal Party candidate Manuel Zelaya had 49.7 percent compared to 46.2 percent for ruling National Party candidate Porfirio Lobo Sosa.
"We are analyzing the results of the elections to determine our future actions," said National Party attorney Ivis Discua.
