The States of Jersey have 53 elected members, 41 elected for a three year term (29 Deputies elected in single- and multi-seat constituencies and 12 Constables, head of the parishes) and 12 Senators elected by Islandwide vote for a six year term, 6 of them renewed every three years.
Jersey is a state in which political parties do not play an important role, although two newly-formed parties have put forward candidates in the 2005 general election.
The election for Senators was held on 19 October 2005.

 The Color of Money in New Jersey 2003
New Jersey exemplifies the national trend: while 32% of the state's residents are people of color, only 11% of the money contributed to federal elections comes from residents of zip codes where the majority is people of color.
The discrepancies are of comparable magnitude in New Jersey: 73.5% of federal campaign contributions came from wealthy neighborhoods; less that 22% of the adult population resides in them.
The $410,894 contributed to the 2003 state elections by the 34,321 adults of Morristown (07960) is more than the total given by all 338,415 residents of the 29 New Jersey zip codes with the highest African-American population (all over 40%).

Prompted by a number of comments and criticisms from various quarters, the Legislation Committee began a review last year of the provisions of the Public Elections (Jersey) Law 2002 to assess whether changes should be recommended in the light of experience in the operation of the Law.
The Privileges and Procedures Committee agreed that this transfer was a logical move, particularly as it already had responsibility for the States of Jersey Law which deals with the election of Senators and Deputies to the States.
The Committee believes that in the event of a voter failing to use an allocated postal vote, it should be open to the voter, on polling day, to take and present their ballot paper to the returning officer at the polling station.
