The term "New Guinea" was applied to the island in 1545 by a Spaniard, Ynigo Ortis de Retez, because of a fancied resemblance between the islands' inhabitants and those found on the African Guinea coast.
Papua was administered under the Papua Act until it was invaded by the Japanese in 1941, and civil administration suspended.
Papua New Guinea’s currency, the Kina, has been eroding in value and the pressure on it continues, with capital flight and frustrated development partners (and subsequently reduced aid flows) exacerbating a declining situation.

With polling in the national elections due to begin on June 15, a series of calls have been made in Papua New Guinea for the government to impose a state of emergency in response to reports of campaign violence.

MAMADY TRAORE (Guinea) noted that the 2001 Bougainville Peace Agreement, despite some delays in weapons collection, was moving forward thanks to the joint efforts of UNPOB and the Government of Papau New Guinea.  He noted the importance of continuing with earnest efforts to achieve reconciliation, re-establish State authority and attain economic and social development.

We are writing to express concern about reports that your government intends to sign an agreement with Australia to extend the use of the Manus Island detention center by Australia for another year, following expiration of the current agreement on October 21.
The detention of individuals on Manus Island, with little or no contact with the outside world, and without access to legal counsel or due process guarantees, is clearly arbitrary and in contradiction to the Guidelines of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.
We believe these detentions violate Papua New Guinea's obligations under international human rights law, as well as Australia's responsibilities under the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol.
