Some indication of how little the population of Sierra Leone will gain from such operations, given that the country’s only source of income is from mineral exports, can be seen in the level of tax that is being applied to diamond companies.

The only explanation for this disproportionate distribution of wealth in Sierra Leone is the prevalence of tribalism and cronyism in SLPP leadership.

Sierra Leone's President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah will not be running in the July  2007 race he announced as the country set its first date for elections since the  United Nations peacekeepers left the country in 2005.
President Tejan Kabbah appealed to his country's voters to see the elections "not as warfare between warlords but as a friendly contest."  In a public broadcast the president set the date for the elections on July 28,  as a demonstration of his government's commitment to good governance and democracy.
President Kabbah was elected in a landslide in May 2002 at a time when peacekeepers were present in Sierra Leone.
