Elections in the European Union - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An election is a process in which a vote is held to elect candidates to an office.
It is the mechanism by which a democracy fills elective offices in the legislature, and sometimes the executive and judiciary, and in which electorates choose local government officials.
The European Parliament has 732 members, elected for a five year term by proportional representation in one or more constituencies in each member country.

European Communities is the name given collectively to the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), the European Economic Community (EEC), and the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom), when in 1967, they were first merged under a single institutional framework with the Merger Treaty.
The European Economic Community (EEC) was an organization established (1958) by treaty between the ECSC countries Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and West Germany, known informally as the Common Market (the Six).
It was for a time proposed that the European Constitution should repeal the Euratom treaty, in order to terminate the legal personality of Euratom at the same time as that of the European Community, but this was not included in the final version.

Essay: Reform in European Union Elections - Coursework.Info
Reform in European Union Elections The first election to the European Parliament was in 1979 under a non-uniformed voting system.
This was because at the point of the 1st election there was still no decision on the system that would be used by all countries, so it was decided as a temporary measure that all countries would just use decide on their own voting system to elect their representative.
Since the 1st election there have been attempts to reform the system, there were proposals that were blocked in 1783, 98 and 1999.

USATODAY.com - Protests mark EU parliament elections   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
BRUSSELS (AP) — Elections for the European Union's parliament were marked by widespread apathy and protest votes as citizens of the 25 EU nations punished their governments for everything from high employment to involvement in Iraq.
The election result means that the European Parliament will be more polarized than ever, with a growing number of anti-EU parties, including far-right anti-immigrant members pitted against the traditional pro-European parties on sensitive issues like approval of a draft EU constitution.
In France, Chirac's Union for the Popular Movement was projected to win about 16.5% of the vote, a far second behind the Socialist Party, with a projected 30%, according to Sofres polling firm.

AUSTRIA:THE 1999 PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS AND THE EUROPEAN UNION MEMBERS' SANCTIONS
Abstract:  The 1999 parliamentary elections in Austria sparked a fire of controversy in the European Union.
When the sanctions were lifted in September, 2000, the European Union was left to reexamine its role and to determine whether to amend its founding treaties to reflect any changes in the relationship between the government of the European Union and its Member States.
In their report to the President of the European Council, the “wise men” note that the addition of a preventative monitoring procedure would allow the EU to deal with a situation similar to that which occurred in Austria from the beginning.

Although previous elections had experienced major electoral fraud it was minimized in these elections thanks to the integrity and commitment of the Election Commissioner Mr Dayananada Dissanayake and his staff.

This statement is based on the observations of election preparations and the campaign by 7 Core Team members for four weeks, 28 long-term observers deployed throughout the country for 3 weeks and 42 short-term observers deployed 10 for days.

The European Union elections and the German far-right   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
In the elections, held two weeks ago, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) suffered a debacle, capturing a mere 31 percent of the votes cast, a drop of 10 percent compared to the party's vote in the German federal elections last autumn.
The German Peoples Union (DVU), which has in the past garnered a relatively high percentage of the protest vote, did not participate in the European elections.
Their loss of votes in the European elections shows that Germany's far-right tendencies are returning to the bosom of the mainstream parties.
