Elective Affinities - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Elective Affinities (originally Die Wahlverwandtschaften in German) is an 1809 novel by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
In early Nineteenth century chemistry, the phrase "elective affinities" was used to describe compounds that only interacted with each other under select circumstances.
Goethe used this as an organizing metaphor for marriage, and for the conflict between responsibility and passion.

In the novel, the chemical term “elective affinities” extends to human relationships, both intimate and political.
Like the alkalis and acids of which Goethe's characters speak, words and images, though apparently opposed, may have a remarkable affinity for one another.
How words and images represent and whether they enjoy a harmonious kinship, engage in border skirmishes, or seek to annihilate one another, are not merely formal matters.

Weber's theory of elective affinities seems a logical choice as it provides a framework for historical interpretation; Merton's functional analysis can be utilized to explore the functional and dysfunctional aspects of Christian speed metal.
The elective affinities model does not address the function(s) or disfunction(s) of the phenomenon under observation since Weber was often not concerned with functions but only with the development of a unique phenomenon.
The elective affinities approach allows the researcher to see the connections between Christian speed metal and the components that are a part of this musical form such as structural conditions, musical structure, visual presentation, and themes.

Goethe’s Die Wahlverwandtschaften [Elective Affinities, 1809] is one of the most densely woven and enigmatic works in his oeuvre.
It was anticipated with more excitement by readers than any of his other works, and, except for Werther and Faust, has inspired more investigations as to its meaning, both at the time of its first publication and since.
Among presentations in media other than print are an East German film: Die Wahlverwandtschaften (1975) and one in Italian with English subtitles: Elective Affinities, by Paolo and Vittorio Taviani (1996), also a recent moveable audience live performance in the castle and park of Ettersburg outside Weimar.
