ELO was where poodle-permed hair, smoking spaceship stages and sequin encrusted string sections intersected with stadium-sized sound.
No, ELO was a monster act that was just hard to beat.
Alas, ELO is pretty much a memory now so if you want to take a trip back to a time when rock acts were larger than life.

  Electric Light Orchestra
When ELO first debuted in 1972 at the Greyhound pub in Croydon, Surrey in England, they were not well received.
To Lynne's surprise, interest in The Electric Light Orchestra had fallen and they were forced to cancel their first U.S. tour in more than fifteen years, as the band failed to sell enough tickets to fill the arena-sized venues.
ELO weren't without 2001 performances though, as the band recorded an episode of Storytellers for VH1 and a special for PBS.

The Electric Light Orchestra were one of the biggest and most successful bands of the late 1970s, producing a massive string of hit singles and albums that almost any other band would envy.
ELO combined classical elements with electronic rock and their influence can still be heard in new Turk bands playing with Moogs--for all their Beatles-in-space trappings, the group was also pretty damn catchy.
ELO's fusion of Beatles-esque harmonies and melodic structure, coupled with their symphonic arrangements was just on the verge of wearing thin at the time they released Out of the Blue.

The Electric Light Orchestra marked a distinct change in fortunes for Jeff Lynne as despite (in my view) writing the stronger songs on the previous Message from the Country album he was still largely living in the shadow of his more famous counterpart.
On this ELO debut Lynne shifts up another gear and overshadows Wood who for a third consecutive album appears to be simply treading water, this time producing a mix of self indulgent and experimental idea's and leaving Lynne to create the real substance that holds the whole set together.
ELO 2 was (predictably given the circumstances) far less successful than its predecessor and only actually charted in the UK for a mere 1 week.

 Electric Light Orchestra
ELO in their mid-70's heyday resembled nothing more than a harder, more macho ABBA, writing deceptively simple pop, firmly grounded in Beatles chord sequences, that was miles away from the flashy soloing and twisted psychedelic-classical spewing of the prog crowd.
Now, I'm not saying that ELO couldn't play...their live shows may have been rote and they seemed reluctant to solo, but they were as tight and creative in the studio as you can stand.
The whole ELO Part II band (aside for a violinist and a tympani player or some shit) quit, so Bevan rounded up a bunch more no-names for another go-round at grinding the ELO name into the dirt while Lynne was off producing the Beatles and whatever.

 Billboard.com - Biography - Electric Light Orchestra
The Electric Light Orchestra's ambitious yet irresistible fusion of Beatlesque pop, classical arrangements, and futuristic iconography rocketed the group to massive commercial success throughout the 1970s.
ELO was formed in Birmingham, England in the autumn of 1970 from the ashes of the eccentric art-pop combo the Move, reuniting frontman Roy Wood with guitarist/composer Jeff Lynne, bassist Rick Price, and drummer Bev Bevan.
In 1988, meanwhile, Bevan formed Electric Light Orchestra Part II with vocalist Neil Lockwood, keyboardist Eric Troyer, and bassist Pete Haycock; although Lynne filed suit against the group (hence the "Part II" tag), a self-titled LP followed in 1991, with a live collection recorded with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra appearing a year later.

All of these criticisms are from people who haven't bothered to listen to ELO from beginning to last and who are too obtuse to realize that Jeff Lynne is a musical genius (and no, I don't use that word lightly).
