Bass guitar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The electric bass guitar (also called an electric bass, or simply a bass) an electrically-amplified string instrument similar in appearance to an electric guitar, but with a larger body, a longer-scale neck and four strings tuned an octave lower in pitch than a guitar.
Due to the role the electric bass plays laying down the low-register foundation for the band, the so-called "modulation" effects, such as chorus, flanger, and phaser, are used much less frequently with the electric bass than with the electric guitar, where the use of effects is the norm.
As well, there are also hollow-bodied acoustic bass guitars.

 Electric Guitar Origins
The idea of the electric bass was very important to him but he was so dissatisfied with his solid body "cello size" bass that he made a 42 inches long, solid body bass out of black walnut, like his guitars, and the electric bass was launched.
Being an ambitious woodworker, he decided to make a solid body for his electric guitar idea and his first one was octagon shaped at the bridge end, containing the pickup and then a long, slender square cornered neck out to the patent heads.
So, this large pickup was eventually installed INSIDE the guitar with a polepiece sticking up through a slot he cut in the top of the guitar near the bridge, and the electric guitar was on its way.

Acoustic bass guitar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unlike the electric bass guitar, which is generally a solid body instrument, the acoustic bass guitar usually has a hollow wooden body similar to (though usually somewhat larger than) that of the steel-string acoustic guitar.
The acoustic bass guitar is an acoustic string instrument based on the configuration of the electric bass pioneered by Leo Fender's electric Fender Precision Bass.
Thin-body semi-acoustic basses such as the violin-shaped Höfner made famous by the early Beatles and several Fender models are not normally regarded as acoustic basses at all, but rather as hollow-bodied bass guitars.

Early influences would have been guitar players like Rory Gallagher, Pete Townsend, David Gilmour etc. As regards traditional music, early influences were definitely Horslips and Alan Stivell, both of whom were doing it with drums, bass, electric guitar etc. Later I heard The Bothy Band and Planxty and I loved both of them.
My first proudest musical moment would be the first time that I performed a concerto on my double bass with an orchestra, my second performing a suite of tunes that I had compiled with an orchestra on the pipes, showing that I could combine the two genres.
