Sitar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A typical sitar has 18 or 19 strings (depending on the style) - there are 6 (in the Vilayat Khan style) or 7 (in the Ravi Shankar style) playable strings on top and 12 sympathetic strings or tarbs under the frets.
It was popularised in the West by The Beatles, whose guitarist, George Harrison, was inspired by - and later taught by - Ravi Shankar.
The sitar is instrument #105 on a General MIDI bank.

FAQ on Sitar and other Indian instruments
On sitar it is typical to tune the last three notes like this: C - B - C for the scale of C so you get an interesting drop off at the end of your downward roll.
As all sitars are made by hand, each one is different, so with generic sitars each one has its own different problems.
Any ideas on tuning my sitar to D? Yes, D is fine, but I would de-tension the strings at least once a week for a day or so and leave it resting "into" (front in) to a corner or in it's case while it's de-tuned so the neck stays back.

The result of amplifying a sitar in this way is truly amazing as not only is it louder, but subtle overtones that become lost when playing acoustically, appear almost magically when the instrument is plugged in.
To our knowledge this is the only fresh approach to the challenge of producing an electric sitar since the Coral 'Vinnie Bell' electric sitar was briefly made available in the early '60s.
The 'Vinnie Bell' electric sitar model, not to be confused with the later Coral guitar-type models, utilized a genuine Indian sitar but had the tonal disadvantage of using built-in magnetic pickups (no acoustic response when amplified and all steel strings must be specially fitted).

George Harrison's interest in Indian music, and the sitar in particular, began in 1965 during the making of The Beatles' movie "Help!", and soon influenced a generation of young musicians following his use of it on their albums Rubber Soul, Revolver and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
The result was the oddly shaped Coral electric sitar, manufactured by the Danelectro company, which first appeared in the stores towards the end of 1967.
The most notable improvement on Bell's original design is in the neck, made of a single piece of maple with a rosewood fingerboard, and attached to the acoustic sound chamber by four bolts.
