ELECTRICITY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Indeed the application of electricity is so general that much of the electrical equipment is necessarily described in the other sections of this book.
The switchboard gallery is at the forward end of the cornpartment at the orlop deck level, and commands a view of the machines.
From the feeder switchboard radiate no fewer than 48 cables, ranging in area up to 61/12 S.W.G. The distribution of current is effected on the single-wire system, but the returns are carried back and bonded in such a way as to avoid stray currents.

 Alternating current
An alternating current (AC) is an electrical current, where electrical charge oscillates (i.e., moves back and forth), rather than flowing continuously in one direction as is the case with direct current.
For safety, a third wire is often connected between the individual electrical appliances in the house and the main electric switchboard or fusebox.
At the main switchboard the earth wire is connected to the neutral wire and also connected to an earth stake or other convenient earthinging point (to Americans, the "grounding point") such as a water pipe.

Alternating current Details, Meaning Alternating current Article and Explanation Guide
An alternating current (AC) is an electrical current, where the magnitude of the current varies in a cyclical form, as opposed to direct current, where the polarity of the current stays constant.
Electrical energy is generated by rotating a coil inside a magnetic field, in large generators with a high capital cost.
Three-phase electricity distribution is widely used in industrial premises, and single phase in the domestic environment.

 Ward's Marine Electric
The standard Ward’s Marine Electric switchboard is a three-phase, four-wire, grounded neutral, split bus system. The neutral and grounding buses are common between the split-bus systems.
The standard switchboard provides “manual” load-share paralleling for the generators, and seamless transfer between a generator and shore power.** “Manual” meaning that the command to parallel, or to seamlessly transfer, are initiated by the operator by pushing the circuit breaker “CLOSE” push button.
Switchboard start-up time allowance for one man is included in the price of the switchboard.

In the "electric" basement room next to Del Mar Blvd. (with a door leading to a stairway up to the street) there are 3 electric meters.
In the electric basement near the 3-phase meter, the 3-phase system has a number of fusible safety switches (a switch which has "safety" because it's enclosed in a metal box and which is "fusible" since it has cartridge fuses in the same box).
As expected, there are high fields near the circuit breaker panels, in the electric basement by the service switchboard, and next to the ventilation electric motors in the basement.

He was responsible for developing the divided multiple switchboard which made it possible for a single switchboard to handle as many as 24,000 lines.
Kellogg's high-capacity switchboard attracted the immediate attention of several new independent telephone companies being organized to compete against Bell in large cities where large-capacity switchboards were fundamental for success.
The lawsuit by Western Electric was, in reality, a "trial balloon" involving certain minor patents that had been infringed by Kellogg in the supply of the switchboard to Kinloch.
