Electricity Supply Board - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Electricity Supply Board (ESB) (Bord Soláthair an Leictreachais in Irish), sometimes called ESB Ireland to differentiate it from US utilities, is responsible for generating most of the electricity in the Republic of Ireland.
The ESB was established by the fledgling Irish Free State government under the Electricity (Supply) Act, 1927 to manage Ireland's electricity supply after the successful Shannon Scheme at Ardnacrusha.
ESB has also been involved in telecommunications, as part owner of Ocean, a telecommunications company which was a joint venture with BT Group plc.

Electricity is responsible for many well-known physical phenomena such as lightning, electric fields and electric currents, and is put to use in industrial applications such as electronics and electric power.
Electric charge is a property of certain subatomic particles (e.g., electrons and protons) which interacts with electromagnetic fields and causes attractive and repulsive forces between them.
Electric charge gives rise to one of the four fundamental forces of nature, and is a conserved property of matter that can be quantified.

ELECTRICITY SUPPLY - LoveToKnow Article on ELECTRICITY SUPPLY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
If a supply of electric current has to be furnished to a building the option exists in many cases of drawing from a public supply or of generating it by a private plant.
The leading factors which make for economy in electricity supply are the magnitude of the output, the load factor, and the diversity factor, also the situation of the power house, the means of distribution, and the provision of suitable, trustworthy and efficient plant.
The general supply of electricity is governed primarily by the two acts of parliament passed in 1882 and 1888, which apply to the whole of the United Kingdom.

Northern Ireland Electricity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
NIE does not generate electricity but purchases it from several power stations in Northern Ireland, as well as interconnectors with the Republic of Ireland and Scotland.
In 1992 the NIES was privatised; the transmission and supply business forming Northern Ireland Electricity plc, while the four power stations at Belfast, Ballylumford, Derry (Coolkeeragh) and Carrickfergus (Kilroot) were sold on the open market.
During the Ulster Workers Council Strike in 1974 when slectricity supplies were severly disrupted the government considered generating power using nuclear submarines in Belfast Lough but the idea was abandoned as being technically unfeasable.

ELECTRICITY SUPPLY - Online Information article about ELECTRICITY SUPPLY
electrical power output, reckoned say in kilowatts, and the I.H.P. of the engine, reckoned in the same units—is a number which falls rapidly as the load decreases, but at full load may reach some such value as 8o or 85%.
Roughly speaking, therefore, the total output of an electric supply station, furnishing current chiefly for electric lighting, is at best equal to about two hours' supply during the day at full load.
function is to supply the difference in the total current circulating through the whole of the lamps respectively on the two opposite sides of the middle wire.

 Seanad Éireann - Volume 14 - 22 July, 1931 - Electricity (Supply) (Amendment) Bill, 1931—Second Stage.
In the second Electricity Supply Act of 1927 two and a half millions were voted for the purposes [1531] set out in the 1927 Act, and for that there was to be done all distribution work, and all expenses in connection therewith had to be met.
The Board tell me at a point that they have expended nearly half a million in breach of agreement; that for the first six months of 1930 that money was spent in breach of agreement, because they did not know at any time with reasonable accuracy what their capital commitments were.
The Electricity Supply Board are in a position to know what the position is. They have been making arrangements for the supply of electricity, and they estimate that in 1932, instead of the 110 million units originally estimated as the demand on the scheme, the Shannon will have to deliver fully 144 million units.

Seanad Éireann - Volume 15 - 17 December, 1931 - Report and Accounts of the Electricity Supply Board. - Motion by ...
When the various Electricity Supply Bills were passing through this House and it was proposed to remove parliamentary control in relation to this new national enterprise it was always said that there was machinery in the form of a motion of this kind whereby the matter could be raised on a suitable occasion.
The members of the Board were seized of what had happened up to date, advised what the actual estimates put before us were, what increases we foresaw in those estimates at that particular time, and what we envisaged as likely in the immediate future, and before the task was through.
If the Board were an independent company looking for a loan from the public it would certainly have to relate the amortisation period or rate of depreciation to the life of the assets they were going to acquire or create with the moneys they borrowed.
