  Electrocardiography
Electrocardiography is a commonly used, non-invasive procedure for recording electrical changes in the heart.
Electrocardiography is a starting point for detecting many cardiac problems.
It is used routinely in physical examinations and for monitoring the patient's condition during and after surgery, as well as during intensive care.

ACC/AHA Clinical Competence Statement on Electrocardiography - Ambulatory Electrocardiogram Monitoring
Ambulatory electrocardiography is used in clinical practice to detect, document, and characterize occurrences of abnormal cardiac electrical behavior of the heart during ordinary daily activities.
Current continuous ambulatory electrocardiography equipment is capable of providing analysis of multiple parameters of cardiac electrical activity including, arrhythmia analysis, analysis of ST-segment shifts, and assessment of heart rate variability.
Ambulatory electrocardiography is a subdivision of clinical electrocardiography and for this reason the criteria for competence are frequently the same as those for classic electrocardiography.

 MSN Encarta - Willem Einthoven
Einthoven's most important invention, the string galvanometer, made possible the precise measurements of the electrical activity produced by the beating human heart.
Modern electrocardiograph machines, which allow physicians to monitor heart function and to detect damage from heart attacks and other causes, are based on Einthoven's original invention.
For his essential contributions to the development of electrocardiography, Einthoven was awarded the 1924 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine.

The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between serious arrhythmias in patients with psychotropic drug overdose and electrocardiography (ECG) findings that have been suggested previously to predict this complication.
Thirty-nine patients with serious arrhythmias (ventricular tachycardia, supraventricular tachycardia or cardiac arrest) after tricyclic antidepressant overdose or thioridazine overdose were compared with 117 controls with clinically significant overdose matched to each case for the drug ingested.
The electrocardiography (ECG) findings examined have included the QRS duration, the QT interval duration, and the axis of the terminal 40 ms of the QRS complex represented by the height of the R wave and the R/S ratio in aVR [6-20].

CJNS-Use of Ambulatory Electrocardiography for the Detection of Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation in Patients with Stroke
There is conflicting evidence in the literature regarding whether routine ambulatory electrocardiography should be performed in all or selected stroke patients.
This paper reviews the available evidence on (1) the yield of ambulatory electrocardiography in detecting paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in patients with stroke or transient ischemic attack and (2) the effectiveness of anticoagulation in preventing recurrent stroke in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.
Interpretation: There is insufficient evidence to recommend for or against the use of ambulatory electrocardiography for the detection of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in either selected or unselected patients with stroke (C Recommendation).

Using a process called electrocardiography, those electrical discharges can be recorded and used to measure the heart's condition.
Since most electrocardiograms show a healthy heart for patients at rest, doctors take the readout while the patient is under the stress of strenuous activity.

A3 The inverse problem of electrocardiography
In contrast to other methods, formulated for pericardial potentials, the strength of describing the inverse problem of electrocardiography in terms of the ventricular depolarization times is that this approach implicitly poses time constraints on the permissable solution space.
The inverse problem of electrocardiography is known to be ill-posed.
A new algorithm to solve the inverse problem of electrocardiography, based on Greensite's `critical point theorem' that had been formulated earlier, was developed.

Signal-averaged electrocardiography (SAECG) is one of the tests used to predict which individuals are at highest risk of experiencing an arrhythmic event (either a sustained arrhythmia or sudden cardiac death).
SAECG is a modification of conventional ECG recordings in which signals are first amplified, then filtered, and finally averaged with the assistance of computer software.
The scientific evidence must permit conclusions concerning the effect of the technology on health outcomes.
