  Electrochemistry Dictionary
This concept is especially important in electrochemistry because an electrochemical cell can be either a current "source" (galvanic cell) or a "load" (electrolytic cell).
It is somewhat analogous to the difference in height in a waterfall that causes the water to fall, or the difference in pressure in a pipeline that causes the gas to flow.
However, in electrochemistry "emf" usually refers to the potential difference between the two electrodes of an electrochemical cell when there is no current flowing through the cell, "voltage" refers to same with current flowing, and "potential" is usually used in connection with electrodes (see electrode potential).

Electrochemistry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Electrochemistry is a branch of chemistry that studies the reactions which take place at the interface of an electronic conductor (the electrode composed of a metal or a semiconductor, including graphite) and an ionic conductor (the electrolyte).
In general, electrochemistry deals with situations where an oxidation and a reduction reaction are separated in space.
An important aspect of the second law of electrolysis is electroplating which together with the first law of electrolysis, has a significant number of applications in the industry, as when used to protect metals to avoid corrosion.

In electrochemistry, this can be done by something called a "salt bridge" which is just an interval of salt solution in contact with the reaction solutions at its two ends.
In electrochemistry, we have charge carriers of both signs, so the current could not always be in the direction of motion, however much we would like it to be.
In electrochemistry we are not dealing with isolated zinc and copper atoms, but water is always lurking in the background, and the zinc and copper are in crystalline form.

The most elegant method of adding, subtracting and redistributing electrons is to manipulate them directly at the required energy level through an electrode held at an appropriate voltage (rigorously "potential").
This is the realm of ELECTROCHEMISTRY - the topic area most likely to strike fear into undergraduate chemists (but only because it has been so underrated and badly taught for so long!).
The reverse process holds true, ie by collecting electrons from a package of appropriate chemicals at a pair of electrodes and moving them through an external circuit, an electric current can be realised.
