Electrode - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A bipolar electrode is an electrode that functions as the anode of one cell and the cathode of another cell.
In a vacuum tube or a semiconductor having polarity (diodes, electrolytic capacitors) the anode is the positive (+) electrode and the cathode the negative (−).
Depending upon the process, the electrode is either consumable, in the case of gas metal arc welding or shielded metal arc welding, or non-consumable, such as in gas tungsten arc welding.

 Electrochemistry Dictionary
An electrode that is shared by two series-coupled electrochemical cells in such a way that one side of the (usually planar) electrode acts as an anode in one cell and the other side acts as a cathode in the other cell.
In case of an electrode reaction, the electrode itself is considered one of the "reactants." An electrode reaction is a heterogeneous charge-transfer reaction.
An electrode reaction is considered to be under “diffusion control” when the overall rate of the reaction is is controlled by the rate of the diffusion of the reactants to the electrode surface rather than the rate of the reaction itself.

 Standard Electrode Potentials
The electrode potential depends upon the concentrations of the substances, the temperature, and the pressure in the case of a gas electrode.
The standard electrode potentials are customarily determined at solute concentrations of 1 Molar, gas pressures of 1 atmosphere, and a standard temperature which is usually 25°C. The standard cell potential is denoted by a degree sign as a superscript.
The maximum voltage which can be produced between the poles of the cell is determined by the standard electrode potentials under the standard conditions under which those potentials are defined.

 BAS FAQ: EC Electrodes
Better potential control is achieved using a potentiostat and a 3 electrode system, in which the potential of one electrode (the working electrode) is controlled relative to the reference electrode, and the current passes between the working electrode and the third electrode (the auxiliary electrode).
Decreasing the size of the electrode to micron dimensions (microelectrodes) decreases the iR drop at the electrode, decreases the electrode capacitance (which allows a faster scan rate to be used for cyclic voltammetry), and changes the diffusion to the electrode surface from linear to radial.
Since the potential of a chloride-containing reference electrode is sensitive to chloride concentration, the electrode must be stored with the frit immersed in a solution that is identical in composition and concentration to the reference electrode solution (e.g., 3 M sodium chloride for the BASi silver/silver chloride reference electrode).

electrode. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
An electrode is usually in the form of a wire, rod, or plate.
The electrode through which current passes from the metallic to the nonmetallic conductor is called the anode, and that through which current passes from the nonmetallic to the metallic conductor, the cathode.
In some electric devices, e.g., an electric battery, nonelectric energy is converted to electric energy, causing current to flow within the device from the negative electrode to the positive electrode, so that the anode is the negative electrode and the cathode is the positive electrode.
