Electrohydrodynamics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Electrohydrodynamics (EHD), also known as electro-fluid-dynamics (EFD) or electrokinetics, is the study of the dynamics of electrically conducting fluid.
It is the study of the motions of ionised particles or molecules and their interactions with electric fields and the surrounding fluid.
Practical fields of interest of EHD are the common air ioniser, Electrohydrodynamic thrusters and EHD cooling systems.

Electrohydrodynamics (EHD) is the study of high-intensity electric field phenomena and their influence on non-conducting (dielectric) media.
Electrohydrodynamics is, in essence, the mirror of electrokinetics, which is concerned with the thrust effect generated by these non-conducting media on the electric field generating apparatuses.
The fifth Electrohydrodynamics International Workshop was held at the University of Poitiers (France) on August 30-31, 2004.

Electrohydrodynamics, which uses the interactions of ions and electric fields to cause fluid to flow, creates the pumping operation.
Electrohydrodynamics has generally not been considered practical for pumping applications, on the assumption that it requires a large amount of energy and does not produce enough motive force for thrust, Garimella said.
The researchers also boosted the force of the pumping action by gluing a thin sheet of piezoelectric material, which expands and contracts in response to an electric current, on top of the cover of the liquid-filled channels.

The U.S. Air Force and NASA developed electrohydrodynamics in the 1960s with TRW and Hughes as a method of manipulating and rotating satellites in space, Perel says.
After the government lost interest in the technology, Perel and Mahoney began to explore it, eventually adapting electrohydrodynamics for a variety of applications after they formed their partnership in 1974.
Perel patiently describes the physics of the electrohydrodynamic technology while sitting at a long wooden table surrounded on three sides by eight-foot-high shelves crammed with reference books and scientific tomes.

The decay by the mass diffusion is greatly affected by the electric field, but the electrohydrodynamic convective flow is not observed.
The complementary grating effect is observed in the mass diffusion under the weak electric field, which is explained well with the hydrodynamic model.

Micro-pump is cool idea for future computer chips
This pumping action is created by a phenomenon called electrohydrodynamics, which uses the interactions of ions and electric fields to cause fluid to flow.
"Engineers have been using electrohydrodynamics to move fluids with electric fields for a long time, but it's unusual to be able to do this on the micro-scale as we have demonstrated," Garimella said.
"Although electrohydrodynamics has generally not been considered practical for pumping applications due to the assumption that it requires a large amount of energy and does not produce enough motive force for thrust, the method has been shown to be far more efficient for micro-cooling applications," Garimella said.

Abstract: We present the hydrodynamic and electrohydrodynamic equations for uniaxial nematic liquid crystals and explain their derivation in detail.
To derive hydrodynamic equations, which are valid for sufficiently small frequencies in the limit of long wavelengths, one identifies first the hydrodynamic variables, which come in two groups: quantities obeying conservation laws and variables associated with spontaneously broken continuous symmetries.

One scientist’s work provides material for an entire course, covering topics ranging from hydrodynamic stability and turbulence to electrohydrodynamics and the locomotion of small organisms.
During the next 30 years, among other achievements, he quantitatively described dispersion of solute in fluid flow; elaborated the basic principles for how microorganisms can swim; and predicted, by dimensional analysis, the energy of the atomic bomb explosion from a series of US government publicity photographs.
He also recognized that accelerating an interface between two fluids can lead to instability, and did seminal work on the interaction between fluids and electric fields, providing the foundation for electrohydrodynamics and the basic principles for a slew of present-day industrial processes and devices.
