Cyclotron - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The cyclotron was invented by Ernest Lawrence of the University of California, in 1929.
As the beam speed increases, cyclotron radiation is emitted from the side of the beam, because the magnet is turning and slowing, ("braking") the beam.
Their limitations caused the invention of the synchrocyclotron (to overcome relativistic effects), and finally the synchrotron, which overcomes the cyclotron's limitations: that the electromagnet saturates (becoming unable to produce additional magnetic field with additional coil current), and larger cyclotrons are much too large because of the shape of their vacuum chambers.

SUMMARY OF THE EASTLUND HAARP PATENT
The charged electrons and ions in the ionosphere also follow helical paths around magnetic field lines within the ionosphere but are not trapped between mirrors as in the case of the trapped belts in the magnetosphere, as the gravitational force on the particles is balanced by collisional or hydrostatic forces.
As energy is absorbed by the trapped electrons by continued second electron cyclotron resonance heating, the mirror points of the particles forming the altered plasma will be raised from their original positions in the lower region to the point in the upper region where said second electromagnetic radiation is being absorbed.
As electron cyclotron resonance is established in plasma 12, energy is transferred from the electromagnetic radiation 20 into plasma 12 to heat and accelerate the electrons, and subsequently ions and neutrals.

Apparatus for creating an artificial electron cyclotron heating region of plasma : Indymedia West Vlaanderen
When the flow of electrons is relatively coherent or constant for at least a complete helical path about a field line, energy may be inputted from the earth along the field line to add energy to the electrons to substantially alter the plasma of which the electrons form a part thereof.
In one embodiment of the invention, electron cyclotron resonance heating is carried out in the selected region at sufficient power levels to allow the plasma to generate a mirror force which forces the charged electrons of the altered plasma upward along the force line to an altitude which is higher than the original altitude.
As electron cyclotron resonance is established in plasma 12a, energy is transferred from the electromagnetic radiation 20 into plasma 12a to heat and accelerate the electrons therein and, subsequently, ions and neutral particles.

Gyrotron - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gyrotrons are high powered electron tubes which emit a millimeter wave beam by bunching electrons with cyclotron motion in a strong magnetic field.
The gyrotron is a type of free electron maser (microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation).
This contrasts to the free electron laser (and xaser) that work on different principles and whose electrons are highly relativistic.

 ECR: Electron Cyclotron Resonance Source
The ECR source is smaller than the Cryebis, providing ions with lower mass and ultimate charge state, but with much greater beam current.
The ions within the trap region are bombarded by electrons excited by 5 GHz microwaves into electron cyclotron resonance (hence the name).
The ECR was designed and built by the group of Erhard Salzborn at the Justus-Liebig-Universitaet in Giessen, Germany.

Auger electron spectra were consistent with surfaces free of residual contamination and which had the stoichiometry of the underlying bulk.

A typical ECR is roughly the size and shape of an oil drum lying on its side.
Their spiral "cyclotron" motion in the fields, plus the heating mechanism, gives the electron-cyclotron resonance source its name.

The radiation heats the plasma and accelerates the free electrons in the plasma thereby increasing the plasma frequency.
The term "gyrotron" will be used throughout this specification to generically describe microwave oscillators based on the interaction of electrons orbiting in a DC magnetic field under the conditions of cyclotron resonance where the magnitude of the DC magnetic field and the microwave frequency are specifically related.
The electrons are accelerated to energies greater than 5 million electron volts (e.g., 20 Mev) to create relativistic electrons which interact with the materials in the objects to thereby produce x-ray and gamma ray (i.e., photons) signatures from the objects.

At the NSCL, the removal of electrons from neutral atoms is accomplished with Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion sources.
Ions from the ECR sources are sent down a beam pipe and injected into the cyclotron for acceleration.
In an ECR source, vapor of the desired element is held in a specially designed magnetic field—a “magnetic bottle” long enough for the elemental atoms to be ionized in collisions with electrons, which are kept in motion by microwaves.

Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating of Plasma (in H-1)
During the ECRH, the microwave power is directly transfered to electrons increasing thus the electron temperature of plasma in the region defined by the crossing of the ECR layer with the millimeter-wave beam.
Depending on the plasma parameters (magnetic field, electron temperature and density), the choice of the electron cyclotron harmonic and the polarization of the wave, the single-pass absorption of the power can reach almost 100%.
At the first stage, ECRH experiment in H-1 will be performed at the second cyclotron harmonic (magnetic field will be 0.5 T) with an extraordinary mode (electric vector of the heating wave is perpendicular to the magnetic field of the machine) launched from a low magnetic field side.

NEXX Systems Applications : ECR Applications
The ECR effect occurs when magnetized electrons are excited with an electric field at resonance with the electron cyclotron frequency.
In the Cirrus systems, the ECR plasma diffuses into a multipolar confinement volume, a field-free region where it achieves exceptional uniformity.
The Cirrus is an enabling technology for deposition on temperature sensitive substrates where temperatures must be kept below 150 °C. The ECR plasma is highly efficient at dissociating the precursors, and the high ion current to the wafer densifies the film.

Megawatt average power sources of 100 GHz-500 GHz radiation are necessary for electron cyclotron heating of fusion plasmas, space power beaming, electromagnetic wigglers for fke-electron lasers, and space-based communications.
Electron cyclotron maser configurations with open quasi-optical resonators such as the quasi-optical gyrotron and induced-resonance electrotron cyclotron (IREC) maser show considerable promise for operation in this power and wavelength regime.
In these configurations, the resonator mirrors can be far removed from the beam-wave interaction region, which will allow a large volume for the interaction and low-ohmic heating densities on the mirrors.
