John R. Pierce /  Electron Tubes
If we regard the motion of electrons as governed by the electric (and magnetic) fields in which they move, and disregard interactions of one electron on others, this applies to electrons in vacuum tubes, and the coordinates are the three position coordinates and the three velocity coordinates.
These were electron flow between an infinite parallel plane cathode and an infinite parallel plane anode, flow between a cylindrical cathode and a central cylindrical anode, and flow between a spherical cathode and a central spherical anode.
One was that of focusing the electron beam.

Brainboost - what are electron tubes and what do they do   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Also Referred to as Electron Tubes - Timeline A vacuum tube also called a electron tubes is a sealed glass or metal - ceramic enclosure used in electronic circuitry to control the flow of electrons between the metal electrodes sealed inside the tubes.
Vacuum Tubes The conduction of electricity in thin gases in vacuum tubes was the key to the discovery of the electron in 1897.
Vacuum tubes were critical devices in electronics technology, leading to the development and commercialization of such technologies as radio broadcasting, television, radar, high fidelity sound reproduction, telephone, analog and digital computers, and industrial process control.

 electron tube — FactMonster.com
electron tube, device consisting of a sealed enclosure in which electrons flow between electrodes separated either by a vacuum (in a vacuum tube) or by an ionized gas at low pressure (in a gas tube).
The two principal electrodes of an electron tube are the cathode and the anode or plate.
In some gas tubes the cathode is not designed as an electron emitter; conduction occurs when a voltage sufficient to ionize the gas exists between the anode and the cathode.

Lessons In Electric Circuits -- Volume III (Semiconductors) - Chapter 13
The semiconductor counterpart to the tube, of course, is the transistor.
Transistors perform much the same function as tubes: controlling the flow of electrons in a circuit by means of another flow of electrons in the case of the bipolar transistor, and controlling the flow of electrons by means of a voltage in the case of the field-effect transistor.
Electrons emitted by the cathode of this tube impinge on a fluorescent screen, causing the green-colored light to be emitted.

Tubes Versus Semiconductors - Electron Tubes
Tubes, being less complex in their manufacture than semiconductor components, are potentially cheaper to produce as well, although the huge volume of semiconductor device production in the world greatly offsets this theoretical advantage.
However, with tubes it is easy to design a stable class A audio amplifier circuit because tubes are not as adversely affected by the changes in temperature experienced in a such a power-inefficient circuit configuration.
For this and other reasons, electron tubes will never be "obsolete," but will continue to serve in niche roles, and to foster innovation for those electronics engineers, inventors, and hobbyists who are unwilling to let their minds by stifled by convention.

 IEEEVM: Electron Tubes
An electron tube (also known as a vacuum tube) is a glass enclosure in which electrons move through vacuum or gas from one metal electrode to another.
A more versatile type of electron tube is the triode, or three-element tube, invented by Lee De Forest in 1906 (his brand name for it was the Audion, but it came to be known as the triode).
The electron tube was the basis of virtually all electronic devices from the early 1900s until the introduction of the transistor in the late 1940s.

 Electron Tubes
A wide variety of electron tubes have used radioactive material: voltage regulators, spark-gap tubes, voltage sensitive switching tubes, glow lamps, etc. In general, such tubes consist of a glass envelope, a fill gas, a radioactive source, an anode and an unheated (cold) cathode.
It was also assumed that the average distance to one tube was 1 meter, the average distance to two tubes was 3 meters and the average distance to the remaining two tubes was 6 meters.
For purposes of this paragraph ‘‘electron tubes’’ include spark gap tubes, power tubes, gas tubes including glow lamps, receiving tubes, microwave tubes, indicator tubes, pickup tubes, radiation detection tubes, and any other completely sealed tube that is designed to conduct or control electrical currents.

Tubes 201 - How Vacuum Tubes Really Work
This sea of electrons is common to all metals, and indeed is really the defining characteristic of a metal and explains many of their familiar properties such as electrical conductivity and the fact that they are shiny.
Tube gassiness is measured, in tube testers, by measuring this small current (typically a few nA), which is in direct proportion to the amount of gas in the tube.
When the screen grid voltage is higher than the plate, electrons emitted from the plate by secondary emission, as it is struck by the energetic primary electrons, are attracted back to the screen grid instead of returning to the plate as occurs in a triode.

Glossary : SLAC Virtual Visitor Center
An electron in a atom is bound because of its electrical attraction to the nucleus, which makes the mass of the atom slightly less than the sum of the masses of the electron plus the rest of the atom without that electron.
Electrons carry electrical current and successful manipulation of electrons allows electronic devices, such as the one you are using, to function.
These energy changes are either in the electron orbital shells that surround an atom or are due to the slowing down (i.e., interaction) of electrons in matter, such as a "target" in an x-ray machine.

Electron tubes - Principle of operation
The electron flow emitting from the filament or cathode is, except for the diode, controlled in some way by means of electrodes with varying potentials in order to attenuate or accelerate the flow of electrons.
The electrons are collected at the anode which usually carries the highest potential with respect to the cathode.
Although the electrons flow from the cathode to the anode, it is generally accepted that current flows from the anode to the cathode.

At the beginning of the 1950’s when most of the U/V modules were developed, electron tubes were the industry standard in the western world; western Germany alone made over 10 million a year.
Most of the EF804 tubes were used by companies like Grundig and AEG for tapemachines, where-as the EF804S was mainly used for specialty electronics where the best possible S/N ratio with low microphonics was needed.
There is also the family of tubes that the EF804(s) belongs to; as mentioned before, despite the different pin layout, the EF804 is extremely similar to the EF40 and EF86.
